Long road: Koepka's journey now includes a US Open title

"I didn't exactly get my dad a card, so this works". "I felt so confident".

Brooks Koepka poses with the winning trophy after the U.S. Open golf tournament Sunday, June 18, 2017, at Erin Hills in Erin, Wis.

Harman led by one stroke going into the final round but took back-to-back bogeys from the 12th and finished with another bogey at 18 as he shot 72. Open on Sunday but despite his six-under-par 66 had to settle for a tie for second place at Erin Hills.

Although he was disappointed to have only managed an even-par 72 during the final-round, it was Fleetwood's first experience of being in contention in a major and he was keen to learn from it. "The conditions were so tough".

England's Tommy Fleetwood was a shot further back in fourth, with former Scottish Open champion Rickie Fowler sharing fifth spot.

It all came together this week for the talented Koepka, who said he practiced patience and it paid off.

The American finished four shots clear of Japan's Hideki Matsuyama, who also finished runner-up to Koepka in his only other win at the Waste Management Phoenix Open in 2015. "That was kind of the changing point of the round for me". The 5-foot-7 Harman said he thrives on playing with what he calls a proverbial chip on his shoulder that dates to when he was a kid playing football.

"It was much better today but I think it's game time, it's prep, it's competitive rounds and I've been very light on those this year", McIlroy had said on Friday. "I've done it before, but he did it today". He looked dejected at times as he made his way up to the green, with Koepka's victory already assured.

A three-time victor on the PGA Tour this season, Thomas also joined the exclusive "59" club by breaking 60 at the Sony Open, but he may have saved his best for Father's Day weekend and his quest for his first major crown.

Koepka, a close friend and training partner of world number one and 2016 US Open champion Dustin Johnson, had only won one title on the PGA Tour since turning professional in 2012. In the group ahead leader Brooks Koepka didn't slip up.

Starting the final round with a bunched leaderboard, Koepka and Harman emerged from the pack to trade blows throughout the front nine. As Brian Harman began to fade, Koepka poured it on with birdies over the next three holes, lightly pumping his fist after each one. Then a 17-footer on 16 for his third birdie in a row. He duly missed to drop back to 13 under.

Tied for the lead with six holes left, Koepka made an 8-foot par putt on 13 that gave him confidence in his putting stroke.

Another birdie chance lipped out on the 12th as the tension mounted. A par on the final hole tied Rory McIlroy's record score to par at 16-under for a four-shot victory.

Koepka said he found himself trying too hard to win.

Koepka then turned the screw with a nerveless trio of birdies to seize the crown.

It was Matsuyama's best finish in a major, another high in a topsy-turvy season.

"I played two good rounds, but it wasn't enough", Matsuyama said of his Open campaign.

"It is nice to go back, though whether or not I'm thinking that on the Monday or Tuesday morning might be debatable". But Thomas followed his record-setting 63 with a 75, and his hopes were essentially dashed after three bogeys over the first five holes.
