Los Angeles lighting Bat-signal for Adam West

DC has announced that the iconic Bat-Signal will be lit over Los Angeles in honour of veteran actor Adam West who passed away last week at the age of 88 after a long battle with leukemia.

Actor Burt Ward, who played Robin alongside Adam West's Batman in the hit 1960s TV series, also paid tribute to his co-star, telling the BBC that the two had enjoyed "an incredible friendship", describing the actor as "a lot of fun".

Ward, 71, who played Batman's sidekick Robin in the 1960s TV show and, said the other half of his dynamic duo spent his life "trying to make this world a better place" as he was joined by West's family on Thursday.

Adam West attends a "Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders" event at New York Comic-Con on October 6, 2016 in New York City.

West found it hard to land other acting jobs after the series ended because he was forever linked to the Batman role but eventually became the voice of Mayor Adam West on "Family Guy" and played himself for years on "The Fairly Odd-parents". In the Batman comics and various series, the bat-signal is how Commissioner Gordon would contact Batman to help with an investigation.

West will play his iconic Batman role one last time in the animated film Batman vs. Two-Face, set to be released later this year.

Without the success of the original Batman series, it is hard to imagine where television or superhero content would be today.

"Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane previously paid tribute to West after his death with a heartfelt Twitter message over the weekend.

West is perhaps best known for playing Batman in the 1960s but, according to the Hollywood Reporter, he first began acting in the 1950s.

For fans who can't make it to the bat-signal lighting, the West family encourages donations to the Adam West Memorial Fund for Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital.
