Macron Finalizes Election Sweep By Winning Absolute Majority In Parliament

While French voters have handed past presidents large majorities in parliament, what's different this time is that Macron's party is splitting - and therefore weakening - the opposition.

If the steamroller effect continues for Macron's party, half of whose candidates are women and the other half new to politics, France will have a chamber of representatives like few others, fulfilling the president's wish to renew a political class dominated by career politicians, peppered with corruption and losing credibility.

French President Emmanuel Macron attends a ceremony marking the 77th anniversary of late French General Charles de Gaulle's appeal of June 18, 1940, at the Mont Valerien memorial in Suresnes, outside of Paris, on June 18, 2017.

Le Pen said she would "fight with all necessary means the harmful projects of the government", especially what she called Macron's pro-European, pro-migrant policies. She said although Macon now has a majority in parliament, his ideas are a "minority" and said the Front National will fight his reform plans.

In the presidential election, Le Pen won more than 50 percent of votes in her head-to-head with Macron in 45 voting districts and drew a total of 10.7 million votes, a historic high for the far-right party.

The far right National Front led by Marine Le Pen between four and six seats.

Turn-out was also thought to be down.

He said politicians in his conservative party are going to have a strong enough bloc in the lower house of parliament to be able to voice their views.

Voters showed little enthusiasm for the election in what could be a record low turnout. Experts partly blamed voter fatigue following the May election of Mr Macron, plus voter disappointment with politics. "The president of the Republic has all the powers", Jean-Christophe Cambadelis said after announcing he would step down as Socialist Party chief.

France's Socialist Party and its allies are projected to win just 34 seats, a dramatic collapse from its previous haul of 277 seats.

Le Pen complained last weekend that the record low first-round turnout raised questions over France's two-round first-past-the-post system that favours larger parties.

This is well down from 46.42 percent seen in the 2012 election and 40.75 percent in the first round of voting in these legislative elections on June 11.

Macron's party "vampirized" the left and right after his huge win in the presidential ballot, Dabi said on CNews TV. His centrist Republic on the Move! party is expected to win more than 400 seats.

Le Pen's victory was a rare bright spot for Le Pen's nationalist and anti-EU party which was once hoping to emerge as the principal opposition to Macron but is now expected to have only a handful of lawmakers.

The May 7 election of the 39-year-old Macron, himself untested, upended France's political landscape, a phenomenon that continued with the parliamentary victory of a party that didn't exist 14 months ago.

The Socialists lost around 200 seats after five years in power under former president Francois Hollande, leaving them with only around 27 to 49 seats.

Jean-Luc Melenchon, the firebrand leader of the movement, is running for election in the southern city of Marseille on a promise to lead resistance to Macron's radical labour market reforms.
