Man catches teen falling from park ride: 'It's OK to let go'

A 14-year-old girl was injured when she dropped from a ride Saturday night at a Six Flags amusement park in upstate NY, the sheriff's office said.

A girl falling from a ride at a NY theme park has been caught by a crowd in a dramatic rescue. The young girl fell from the Sky Ride attraction, a gondola that travels along a rail spanning hundreds of feet across Six Flags Great Escape.

I don't know how in the hell this girl ended up hanging off a ride at Six Flags but it happened, and of course it was caught on film.

In a rescue caught on video by witness Loren Lent, the teen slips out from the 2-person vehicle she was sharing with a relative and momentarily dangles 25-feet in the air.

The girl lost her grip and fell to where Mr Howard, Ms Winchell and others were waiting. The girl's little brother was shaken but otherwise uninjured.

"That's when I yelled up to her I said just fall, I promise I'll catch you", Howard said.

A 47-year-old was also treated and released following the incident after reportedly suffering a back injury while catching the girl. "We were in the right place at the right time". The ride was stopped by an operator after getting word of a rider in distress. "Once it stopped she continued to hang for about 3-4 minutes screaming!", Facebook user Crystal Nadareski wrote in a post accompanying the video. He said on Sunday that his 10-year-old daughter and wife were on the ride and watched from high above as the girl fell. "She was crying for about a half-hour after".

When asked about safety procedures at the park, Hansen said all rides have a standard evacuation plan.

"There does not appear to be any malfunction of the ride, but we have closed the attraction until a thorough review can be completed", a park official said.

"I'll never let my family on that ride again", he said. The park said in a statement that the safety of guests is a top priority. Rebecca Wood, a spokesperson with Six Flags said the ride had been cleared to resume operation by the New York State Department of Labor.

Hansen said even though the park had permission to re-open the ride, park officials kept it closed "out of an abundance of caution".
