Man dies as van hits mosque crowd in London

The Muslim Council, which is the U.K.'s largest Muslim umbrella organization, has also said that a van has run over worshippers as they were leaving.

British Prime Minister Theresa May has described it as a "terrible incident".

The chairman of the Finsbury Park Mosque says the van crash that hit worshippers was a "cowardly attack" and urged Muslims going to mosques to be vigilant.

Police cordon off a street in the Finsbury Park area of north London after a van hit pedestrians.

"Imam Mohammed Mahmoud's bravery and courage helped calm the immediate situation after the incident and prevented further injury and loss of life", the Muslim Welfare House was quoted by Guardian as saying.

One person has been arrested after a van hit pedestrians in north London, injuring several people.

He said the driver had run out of the van but a group of people caught him and held him until police arrived. "We stopped the guy and we put him on the floor and people managed to call police", Hashi said, showing CNN his bruises.

Police said the driver had also been taken to hospital and would receive a mental health assessment.

London's transport authority said on Twitter that the Seven Sisters road had been closed due to an "emergency services incident".

The Evening Standard newspaper said that the "rented" van swerved onto the pavement on Seven Sisters Road shortly after midnight. Police killed three Muslim extremists who carried out the attack. Officers on patrol nearby were at the scene within seconds and made one arrest. "My prayers are with the victims and their families", read the statement.

'I'm totally shocked at the incident at Finsbury Park tonight. This comes after a month after three knife-wielding Islamist attackers went on a rampage in London killing seven people. "He has been taken to hospital, and will be taken into custody once discharged", the Metropolitan Police said in a statement.

The Council has called for increased security measures at mosques.

A later tweet said: "We have sent a number of ambulance crews, advance paramedics and specialist responses teams to the scene".

No other details were immediately available.

Britain set its terror at "severe", meaning an attack is highly likely, after a pair of incidents recently.

Last month a suicide bombing killed 22 people and injured dozens more at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester.
