Man drives into crowd of people leaving mosque; 1 dead

One man was killed and another eight have been injured after a van drove into worshippers close to a mosque in north London.

Islington's Seven Sisters Road, where the incident took place, is home to several mosques, and would have likely been filled with worshipers leaving late-night taraweeh prayers.

Here is what we know so far.

"He just came into all of us".

The white van hit people outside the Muslim Welfare House on Seven Sisters Road.

Calls were made to the emergency services at around 00:20 BST. It is believed that the British Police's counter-terrorism unit is investigating the incident as a terror attack.

Police have confirmed a number of casualties after the collision which happened at about 12.20am on Monday.

In 2015, the mosque was one of around 20 that took part in an open day organised by the MCB to promote better understanding of Islam following Islamist-inspired terrorist attacks in Paris. Eight others were taken to three area hospitals and two were treated at the scene.

Eyewitness Cynthia Vanzella said it was a mixed community, with people from many different countries and cultures. Police did not confirm that.

Witnesses reported seeing one man giving CPR to a victim in the street, while another man's head injury was treated with a makeshift dressing.

A 48-year-old male suspect was arrested at the scene, according to London Metropolitan police.

He was first detained by members of the public as they waited for police to arrive on the scene. He will be given a mental health evaluation.

One person was killed and 10 others were injured after a commercial vehicle raced into a group of Muslim worshippers when they had finished their Ramadan services at a mosque in northern London.

What has the reaction been?

Several witness accounts indicate that the victims were worshippers leaving a mosque in London's Finsbury Park.

- Jeremy Corbyn, the leader of Britain's opposition Labour Party tweeted "I'm totally shocked at the incident at Finsbury Park tonight".

"I've been in touch with the mosques, police. My thoughts are with those and the community affected by this very bad event". "My thoughts are with those and the community affected by this bad event".

"Due to the nature of this incident extra policing resources have been deployed in order to reassure communities, especially those observing Ramadan", the Guardian quoted the statement as saying.

"We urge all to remain calm and do their utmost not to inflame an already volatile and distressing situation", it said in a statement.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan called the incident "a horrific terrorist attack" and said "this was clearly a deliberate attack on innocent Londoners".

In a statement Khan said, "While this appears to be an attack on a particular community, like the bad attacks in Manchester, Westminster and London Bridge it is also an assault on all our shared values of tolerance, freedom and respect".

"During the night, ordinary British citizens were set upon while they were going about their lives, completing their night worship", said Harun Khan, the secretary general of the Muslim Council of Britain.
