Man who shot congressman was living in van, called a loner

Donald Trump

Over the last several weeks, Hodgkinson spent time at a YMCA near the site of the shooting, sitting with a computer in the lobby or at a table in an exercise area that overlooked the baseball field. Euille said he had no indication this man would do anything so heinous as to shoot at congressmen playing baseball.

Trump-hating James Hodgkinson wanted to protest the president by moving to Washington D.C. - but found himself lonely, isolated and living out of his gym bag, it emerged Wednesday.

"He was a very friendly person", Euille said.

Former Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille, who had conversed with Hodgkinson while at the gym, said that he thought he was homeless since he always carried around a bag full of clothes and was often in the same outfit.

"He didn't say anything - he was just shooting", Peoples said. One day, he said, he glanced at Hodgkinson's open gym bag and was puzzled.

The FBI on Wednesday confirmed the gunman's identity as 66-year-old James Hodgkinson of Belleville, Illinois.

"I saw him over the course of weeks and weeks", said Brennman, a lawyer with offices in Washington. Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign.

But Hodgkinson never looked at him and never said a word, he said.

In 2006, he was arrested on a battery charge after allegedly punching a woman in the face, then striking her boyfriend in the head with the wooden stock of a 12-gauge shotgun before firing a round at the man, according to a sheriff's department report.

Euille said he had been told by the manager of the YMCA that Hodgkinson was last seen there at 7am Wednesday morning, shortly before the shooting. Hodgkinson later passed in the hospital after getting shot by Capitol Police officers returning fire.

"He said that he had seen one shooter wedged between the two buildings", said Pastore.

Brennman said he was curious but never asked staff members about him.

"He had this kind of faraway stare", Brennwald said.

"He said, 'I understand, ' and said he needed to take the gun to a range to shoot it, Watson said".

"I never saw him get mad when people were talking good, bad or ugly about any of the political parties", Euille told The Associated Press.
