Many Florida based Cuban exiles embrace Trump policy but want more

President Donald Trump Friday charted his own course for more confrontational relations with the Castro-led government in Cuba with

He clamped down on some commerce and travel but left intact many new avenues President Barack Obama had opened.

The government has though repeated its desire to engage in "respectful dialogue" with Washington.

In response to Trump's concern about human rights violations on the island, the Cuban diplomats said the U.S.is no condition to give them lessons.

Rubio, who helped craft the president's policy, criticized the Obama administration, which restored diplomatic relations with Cuba in 2015, saying it allowed too many concessions, in turn hurting Cuban citizens while benefitting the country's military.

Noting that the past five decades has shown the futility of "the arrogant style of doing business with Cuba", the ministry warned the USA government that the anti-Cuban discourse, still in high demand though, would only cause regret.

The move is created to target the repressive elements of the Cuban regime over human rights concerns and not the Cuban people, said officials, who briefed reporters ahead of the announcement on the condition they not be named.

"Effective immediately I am canceling the last administration's completely one-sided deal with Cuba", Trump said Friday.

More broadly, USA engagement with Cuba has improved cooperation on everything from counter-narcotics to environmental protection.

Mr Trump cast that as a sign the U.S. still wanted to engage with Cuba in hopes of forging "a much stronger and better path".

The lengthy statement then went on to strike a conciliatory tone, saying Cuba wants to continue negotiations with the USA on a variety of subjects. "You heard that pledge. and here I am", he said in Florida. Even as US travelers flock to Havana, the Castro regime's political repression continues and its stranglehold on the economy endures.

Moscow maintains close ties with Havana, and in March signed a deal to ship oil to Cuba for the first time in over a decade. "While we are reviewing what this policy could mean for this type of travel, we appreciate that the policy appears to allow us to continue to support Airbnb hosts in Cuba who have welcomed travelers from around the world". He has already pulled the United States out of a major worldwide climate treaty and is trying to scrap his predecessor's landmark healthcare programme.

"Last year, I promised to be. a voice for the freedom of the Cuban people", he said in Friday's speech.

President Donald Trump's new measures restricting some trade and travel with Cuba did not go very far in practical terms, but they made a big noise in the place most eager to hear it: Miami's Little Havana neighborhood.

Trump also stated that the complete change of these regulations is just a small part from shifting away from Obama's Policy. "All the (U.S. economic) embargo has brought upon Cuba is misery". The move will curtail the number of Americans traveling to the country, and likely damage numerous "potential sellers" Obama mentioned.

For Cubans, the shift risks stifling a nascent middle class that has started to rise as Americans have flocked to the island on airlines, patronizing thousands of private bed-and-breakfasts.
