May faces calls to soften Brexit line as political limbo drags on

Former British prime minister John Major is the latest to warn that the alliance cobbled together between the reactionary Ulster Democratic Party and Major's fellow Conservative, Prime Minister Theresa May, who is clinging to office by her fingernails, has put the peace process in Ireland in dire jeopardy.

IT'S rare for the north's broadcast media and their counterparts in Britain to be camped out side-by-side on Downing Street, as ordinarily these two political spheres are kept entirely separate. Brexit negotiations that were scheduled to begin next week was also likely to be postponed.

Sadly, the truth of the matter is that British voters voted for this: they had the chance to guarantee Brexit, a hard or a soft one, but have failed to do so.

Meanwhile, the European Union was preparing to unveil plans to give itself new powers over London's banking business after Brexit, in a blow to its supremacy as a global financial hub.

This is why the DUP favors a "soft" Brexit, which is why the Conservative party in Great Britain now is embroiled in an internal debate between a hard and soft Brexit strategy.

"Yesterday Emmanuel Macron, the new French president, spoke about an open door, he said if Britain is changing its mind it will find an open door", Verhofstadt told the European Parliament.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn countered with a bit of previously unseen swagger, wearing a huge red rose — his party's symbol — in his lapel as he sparred with May and taunted her about the uncertainty surrounding the upcoming vote on her legislative program, known as the Queen's Speech.

"Look at what the Tories (Conservatives) have managed to do to the United Kingdom in the space of just one year, firstly calling a divisive and reckless European Union referendum. then having lost that gamble pursuing a hard Brexit path", Scotland's first minister, Nicola Sturgeon, said. That would nearly certainly mean no free access for British companies to the EU's huge single market, likely damaging what already threatens to be weak economic growth.

The same newspaper published a column Tuesday by former Tory leader William Hague in which he called not for a collation government, but for a coalition approach to the Brexit negotiations.

This crisis will be exacerbated for a DUP-backed May government, given that the main party of the Northern Irish Unionist bourgeoisie are committed to a "soft Brexit".

May appointed Steve Baker, a prominent Brexit campaigner, to the Department for Exiting the EU. Clearly, if May forms a government that relies for its survival on the radical right-wing and sectarian DUP, that principle is in considerable danger.

In a reflection of her newfound humility, May managed a joke at her own expense as Britain's House of Commons got underway in the first sitting after Thursday's general election.

The deal is now not expected to be announced before next week.

Asked about Schaeuble's comments, Macron said the EU's door was still open for Britain as long as the negotiations were not finished, but that it would be hard to reverse course.
