Microsoft isn't making a profit with their new Xbox One X console

Xbox boss Phil Spencer announced during this year's Microsoft E3 2017 press conference that original Xbox games would be playable on Xbox One later this year. The console has the kind of horsepower that you'd expect in a high-end gaming PC. The question is, will they? To my mind, while the Xbox One X is definitely more powerful than the Pro, it is analogous.

"We're all about choice", he said, pointing to the Xbox One S as a more than capable console that is available at a relatively affordable price point, starting at $250 right now. "But I also know that in the gaming space, having a premium experience for the customer that wants that is critical", Spencer said. When you're on PC there's that abstraction layer. Xbox One X will be offering 6 teraflops (trillion floating point operations per second), in comparison to only 4.2 offered by PS4 Pro. This is a great way to attract potential new buyers to the console, and can be seen as a great marketing technique to boost the popularity of both the One X and the Game Pass. If game designers have to support four-year-old hardware, how are they supposed to max out the capabilities of this beastly (yet surprisingly small) new box?

Speaking with Eurogamer, Spencer's stance on the current Playstation vs. Xbox rival is made abundantly clear. Example of this is PlayStation 3 and Wii U, although Nintendo assured that they would sell Switch with profits. "This held back notion - I know that you're not unique in calling this out". I said. "I didn't answer it that way", he responded, intentionally not offering more detail.

In lamen's terms, he wants to do it and he thinks it's possible, but it would take a good amount of work.

Conspicuous in their absence, however, were Microsoft's two biggest homegrown franchises, Halo and Gears of War. When asked further: So, Microsoft is taking a loss? "So I'm putting a lot of pressure on the team to go get enough content lined up to do something on the PC, and then make sure we have a long-term commitment to build".

Microsoft has been keen to include its PC user base in future gaming plans as shown by the Xbox Play Anywhere initiative, which debuted a year ago.
