More than $20000 raised for lobbyist injured in congressional shooting

Steve Scalise remains in critical condition, undergoes third surgery

Rep. Steve Scalise's condition is continuing to improve after he was shot Wednesday at a congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia.

Scalise is the congressman who was seriously wounded when a gunman opened fire at a Republican congressional baseball practice.

Scalise, 51, was one of four people shot by gunman James T. Hodgkinson - who was killed by Capitol Police at the park.

MedStar Washington Hospital Center Director of Trauma Dr. Jack Sava speaks during a news conference in Washington, Friday, June 16, 2017, about the condition of House Majority Whip Steve Scalise of La. who was shot in Alexa.

After additional surgeries and rehabilitation, Scalise can be expected to walk "and hopefully run", Sava said. "He is more responsive, and is speaking with his loved ones". The bullet that struck Scalise tore through his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs and causing severe bleeding, the hospital said. He has been sedated, but has been brought out of sedation periodically and been able to recognize and communicate with his family, Sava said.

Jennifer Scalise also is thanking the first responders who rushed to her husband's aid Wednesday and the staff at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, where her husband remains in critical condition.

"Earlier today, Congressman Steve Scalise underwent a second surgery related to his internal injuries and a broken bone in his leg".

President Donald Trump and his wife, Melania, visited with Scalise late Wednesday.

On Thursday night Scalise was honored at the annual congressional baseball game at Nationals Stadium, where a record crowd showed up.

The surgeon said there were hundreds of bullet fragments in Mr Scalise's body, but "we have no intention to try and remove all the bullet fragments at this point". "I feel a lot more optimistic than I did two, three days ago". He said doctors have turned down Scalise's sedation levels enough that the lawmaker has been able to respond to family members visiting him in the hospital.

Ms Griner remains in hospitali at MedStar after being shot in the ankle and Mr Bailey was spotted on Friday in the Capitol, on crutches and out of uniform, accepting congratulations from fellow officers.
