Muslim girl killed in Virginia; police blame "road rage"

Muslim girl killed in Virginia; police blame

Fairfax County authorities said there is "no indication" that the death of 17-year-old Nabra Hassanen was a hate crime, the Washington Post reports.

Authorities later said it appeared to be a result of road rage.

Police allege that Darwin Martinez Torres, 22, got into an argument with a teen in the group as the friends returned to the mosque, drove his auto over a curb, chased the group and used a baseball bat to hit Hassanen in a parking lot nearby. Martinez Torres caught up with them in a nearby parking lot, got out of his vehicle armed with a baseball bat and began chasing the group, she said.

A pond where the body of a teenage Muslim girl was found is shown on Monday, June 19, 2017, in Sterling, Va.

During the search, police said they stopped a auto being driven in a suspicious manner in the area, and took the driver Torres into custody.

A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesperson told NBC Washington that Torres, who is originally from El Salvador, was living in the U.S. illegally, and officials filed a detainer against him.

The groups say that Hassanen's murder "is yet another wake up call in the chain of events of Muslim women viciously attacked in hate crimes across the country".

The attack happened after the victim and several friends walking outside the mosque got into a dispute with a motorist in the community of Sterling, the police said in a statement. Police said she was 17, while the county prosecutor's office said she was 16, the Post reported.

The girl's father, Mohmoud Hassanen Aboras of Reston says he doesn't understand that, because his daughter, 17-year-old Nabra Hassanen, was a friend to everyone.

Nabra's father was born in Egypt and moved to the USA in 1987, she was born in the USA along with her siblings.

Fairfax County Police Department spokesperson Tawny Wright suggested there was not now evidence the attack was a hate crime. My daughter, she's gone. Hassanen said. "When I go to court I'm going to look him in the eye: why did you do this to my daughter?". I told the detective: 'I want to ask him one question. They said that when the vehicle pulled up beside them and slowed down, they thought the driver might even be a friend, playing a joke. The mosque holds prayers throughout the night during the observance of Ramadan, said Tajul Islam, a receptionist at the ADAMS Center. "Why? We have to help each other, Muslim, Christian, Jew". The group of more than a dozen kids did not immediately realize Hassanen was missing.

Hassanen's mother Sawan Gazzzar echoed that sentiment to The Washington Post. The boys declined to give their names.

Later, at about 15:00, police found the remains in a pond some three miles (five kilometres) from the scene of the incident, police said in a statement.

As Crime Online previously reported, Nabra was walking with a group of friends back to a mosque on Sunday after a predawn breakfast during the holy month of Ramadan, when observers fast from sunrise to sunset.
