NKorea denies torturing US student Warmbier - KCNA

Days after USA student Otto Warmbier died, North Korean state media said his death was a "mystery" and dismissed accusations he was tortured during his 17 months in captivity in the country.

A U.S. student released by North Korea to the USA in a coma was a victim of the "strategic patience" policy of former President Barack Obama, who never requested his release, says Pyongyang.

North Korea has been in the news a lot lately following the death of Otto Warmbier.

The student was released from North Korea on June 13, a week after the U.S. Department of State learned he had fallen into a coma after contracting botulism.

President Donald Trump has slammed the treatment of 22-year-old American Otto Warmbier, who spent more than a year in detention in the secretive state, as "a total disgrace".

USA doctors say he suffered a "severe neurological injury", the most likely cause of which was a cardiopulmonary arrest that had cut the blood supply to the brain.

Otto Frederick Warmbier, a University of Virginia student who had been detained in North Korea since January 2016, is taken to North Korea's top court in Pyongyang, North Korea, in this photo released by Kyodo News, on March 16, 2016.

The KCNA news agency said the North dealt with him according to its domestic laws and worldwide standards. He was arrested for allegedly stealing a political sign from a restricted area and sentenced to 15 years of hard labor.

"I was just so happy to see the kid released", Rodman said about the day he heard Warmbier was being released in an interview on Good Morning America.

He said that North Korean medics had "brought him back alive" after his "heart was almost stopped" but did not give any further details as to why he fell ill. Officials at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where he was treated, declined to provide details, and his family asked the Hamilton County Coroner on Tuesday not to perform an autopsy. "Their tireless efforts resulted in the release of at least 10 Americans from North Korean custody during the course of the Obama administration".

Warmbier died Monday, just days after he returned to the U.S., and his funeral was held in his hometown in Ohio Thursday.

Otto Warmbier's brother, sister and friends were scheduled to speak at the funeral Thursday in his hometown of Wyoming, near Cincinnati.

His family and others have blamed North Korea for his condition.

Warmbier's death caused a public furor in the US, bringing home the threat posed by North Korea to average citizens more than dozens of ballistic missile and nuclear tests over the past few years.

South Korea said the women defected on their own, while North Korea claimed they were deceived and abducted to the South.

Volo said they hope to meet with the family but have been told "it just couldn't happen".

The Foreign Ministry statement also criticized South Korea, which had called on the North to release its other detainees including six South Koreans.
