'No reason' to cancel Trump's United Kingdom visit

The war of words was the latest episode in a long simmering feud between Trump and Khan, who was elected as London's mayor in May 2016. And as the president of the world's superpower, Mr Trump should be advised to do the same: to think before he tweets.

In the aftermath of the attack last weekend in London, Trump targeted Khan, tweeting on Sunday: "At least 7 dead and 48 wounded in terror attack and Mayor of London says there is 'no reason to be alarmed!'".

Attacks at the London Bridge and Borough Market kill seven and injure nearly 50.

"Londoners will see an increased police presence today and over the course of the next few days - no reason to be alarmed", Khan said.

The U.S. Embassy in London, in contrast, praised the "strong leadership" of the mayor "as he leads the city forward after this heinous attack" in a tweet signed by acting Ambassador Lew Lukens.

As Khan said he had "better things to do" than respond, he was backed by American politicians, including NY mayor Bill De Blasio.

Tim Farron, leader of the Liberal Democrats, made a similar call on Monday, saying Trump was insulting Britain's values "at a time of introspection and mourning".

Most Brits generally side with Khan when it comes to Trump - according to recent polling data, 64 percent of United Kingdom voters agreed that Trump is a "threat to worldwide stability", and 50 percent associated him with the word "dangerous".

British Prime Minister Theresa May was among those who came to Khan's defense, though she declined to criticize Trump over the row.

Khan's spokesman repeated his response of a day earlier: "Nothing has changed since yesterday".

But when pressed on whether he thinks a state visit for later this year should go ahead as planned, Khan was unequivocal.

Numerous questions at Nauert's debut on the State Department podium were about Trump's tweets. He also spoke at a vigil for victims, and throughout all of this, Trump has continued to trash Khan (to justify his own "travel ban") based upon an out-of-context quote, for which Trump seized upon the "no reason to be alarmed" portion.

May has been attacked by both the opposition Labour Party and the media for her reluctance to publicly criticize Trump.

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson reiterated on Tuesday that the visit is happening, even though Trump is pressing a false attack on London's mayor in a time of tragedy.

Johnson said Khan was right to reassure people about the heightened police presence. "I'm not tangoing with this guy, I've got better things to do. And I think that's what he's trying to say because he's been proven right every time". Asked why the president had misquoted the mayor, she said, "I don't think that's actually true".
