One dead, 10 injured in London mosque incident

Police said the 48-year-old man who was driving the auto has been arrested and taken to a hospital as a precaution.

Theresa May confirmed the incident was being investigated as a suspected terrorist attack and she chaired a meeting of the Government's Cobra committee. "The investigation of the incident is being carried out by the Counter Terrorism Command".

The Interior MInister Amber Rudd said police "immediately" treated the incident as a suspected terrorist attack.

She told the BBC that the van seems to have hit people who were coming out of the Finsbury Park mosque after prayers finished.

Police have not offered any details about the cause of the crash.

Finsbury Park Mosque Chairman Mohammed Kozbar tweeted his condolences for the "cowardly attack".

Sky News reported that police said the incident happened after worshippers were leaving the Finsbury Park mosque after prayers. The man has been taken to hospital "as a precaution".

The incident follows a series of attacks in Britain.

A witness, 38-year-old worshipper named Mehdi, told the Evening Standard that the van "tried to do a London Bridge thing", referring to the June 3 incident in which three male attackers deliberately crashed their van into pedestrians on the London Bridge.

The Metropolitan Police have also confirmed that extra policing resources will be available in the aftermath of the attack.

Finsbury Park mosque used to be infamous as the stamping ground of hook-handed hate preacher Abu Hamza.

It was then that a white van came down the street, mounted the pavement and drove into people.

Earlier this month, three men who pledged allegiance to the Islamic State terrorist organization, rammed a van into pedestrians on London Bridge before stabbing passers-by, killing eight.

Emergency services were called to Seven Sisters road in Finsbury Park, north London, after reports a vehicle had hit pedestrians just after midnight.

Pictures have also circulated, purportedly of the white van involved. A number of police and ambulances were in attendance.

The Muslim Council of Britain, the largest umbrella body representing Muslims in the United Kingdom, has condemned the incident as a "terror attack" on worshippers.

"The British Muslim community requires all decent people to stand with us against this evil violence", he said, adding that "rampant Islamophobia has been on the rise for a number of years".

Kevin Bate, director of The London Ambulance Service (LAS) said, without elaborating on the conditions of those injured, that the paramedic services were called at 00.15 hours (local time) to attend a traffic accident on the Seven Sister Boulevard.
