Pakistan Lifts Champion Trophy 2017 beating India

A maiden hundred from novice worldwide opener Fakhar Zaman and then Mohammad Amir's superlative new-ball spell of three for 16 proved way too much for hot favourites India, defeated by 180 runs at The Oval.

Though Fakhar had illuminated The Oval, there was a suspicion that Pakistan's total was within reach of India's stellar batting.

While the country's largest paper, the Urdu-daily Jang, announced: "Pakistan Champions, trounced Indian team".

Earlier, Fakhar Zaman's maiden one-day global hundred was the cornerstone of Pakistan's 338-4.

Pakistan piled up an impressive 338 for four after being put in to bat and India's much-vaunted top order of Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Kohli were blown away by an inspired opening burst by Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir.

It was then over to Amir, who quickly dispelled the predictions of many that India could pull off a tournament and ground-record run chase - in the process silencing the majority support in a sell-out crowd for this high-profile showdown as their team folded to 158 all out in 30.3 overs. It was not supposed to be that way in anyone's script of the Champions Trophy.

In another tweet, he said, "Valiant soldiers of Pakistan congrat Team Pak & Nation".

In India nearly all print media went easy on Kohli and his team, crediting Pakistan's performance though the front-page of the Hindustan Times screamed "Obliterated at the Oval: India humiliated by Pak".

Naturally, the newspapers of Pakistan went on the celebration mode. This is also the first in the 50-over format since Imran Khan lifted the World Cup on a starry Melbourne night 25 years ago.

"What a great redemption!" said her mother-in-law, referring to Pakistan's Mohammad Amir.

India captain Virat Kohli defended his decision to bowl on a flat track and said a lucky reprieve for centurion Fakhar Zaman proved to be a costly one in the Champions Trophy final against Pakistan here on Sunday.

Spinner Shadab Khan snared Yuvraj Singh lbw for 22 and Dhoni, India's former captain who has saved the team on many occasions, pulled Hasan Ali to Imad Wasim at deep square leg to depart for four.

"To be appointed as captain of the Team of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017, which includes some of the finest and most attractive cricketers of this generation, is the flawless icing on the cake", remarked Sarfraz.

India still had three wickets in hand but the deafening cheers from the Pakistan fans made clear that the end was nigh.

Pandya took to Twitter to express his displeasure with the loss and wrote, "Hume to apno ne loota, gairo me kahan dum tha (We were looted by one of us, why blame others)". "The whole group kept believing".

"We wanted to bowl first".

In Champions Trophy history, 2013 has been the only edition in which the team batting first won the final.
