Paris Air Show takes off between June 19-25

The 737 Max 10, which will be Boeing's first new model since the unveiling of the 777X series at the Dubai Air Show in 2013, will be 1.68 metres longer than the Max 9, now the biggest member of the re-engined 737 family, which was launched alongside the Max 7 and 8 in 2011.

The rival Boeing 787 on the tarmac at the Paris Air Show in Le Bourget onSunday. As always, Boeing and Airbus will duke it out for orders and attention by bringing their latest hardware.

But many expect the number of new civilian aircraft orders to fall short of the sales the companies managed to clock up during the previous show two years ago.

Boeing, which said airline passenger traffic was up 8 per cent this year compared with 5 per cent last year, is expected to announce the launch of a new version of its 737 Max aircraft to take on Airbus in Paris. According to those familiar with the matter SpiceJet could acquire as many as 20 737 Max 10 aircrafts while Lion Mentari Airlines PT is in talks with Boeing for 20 airplanes, but could acquire as many as 50 from a combination of commitments and conversions of existing orders for smaller 737 Max jets. Yet the industry remains optimistic about sustained long-term growth.

Boeing, meanwhile, is to showcase the 737 Max 9 model as its anti-Airbus weapon in a market segment where the capacity to squeeze a few more seats into a narrow-body cabin while eking out increased fuel efficiency over greater ranges is key. Airbus says its tweaked design will add a further 80 seats to the world's largest passenger plane.

Competition in the sector is also on the rise, with Chinese and Russian aviation firms test-flying their own mid-range models.

The star of the show will likely be the cutting-edge F-35 stealth jet fighter.

Created to creep up undetected on ground targets and for air-to-air combat, the jet will Wow the crowd with daily flights impressing potential foreign customers for Lockheed Martin.

Briefings, by the plane's chief test pilot and others, on the jet's aerial capabilities and the F-35 program is expected produce news about recent problems that grounded US Air Force F-35s at a base in Arizona, after pilots reported symptoms of oxygen deprivation.

After years of booming orders, driven by rising air travel and more fuel-efficient planes, passenger jetmakers are bracing for a slowdown in demand while they focus on meeting tight delivery schedules and ambitious production targets.
