Pedestrians struck by vehicle in London; police report several casualties

"There has been one person arrested", who was believed to be the driver of the van, police said.

A Reuters witness saw at least one person being loaded into an ambulance.

The Finsbury Park mosque has been associated with hate preacher Abu Hamza and a number of terrorists including shoe-bomber Richard Reid, who attempted to detonate explosives on a flight from Paris to Miami in 2001. The 48-year-old driver was arrested and taken to hospital. Eight people were killed before the men were shot to death by police. Anywhere from five to 11 people were mowed down, the witnesses said.

"I've been in touch with the mosques, police and Islington council regarding the incident".

Police and paramedics were called to Seven Sisters Road just after midnight following the incident near Finsbury Park Mosque.

"There was this white van stopped outside Finsbury Park Mosque that seems to have hit people who were coming out of the mosque after prayers finished".

One witness named Rayan told CNN it was evident that the attacker carried out the attack deliberately to target Muslims at Finsbury Park. "My prayers are with the victims and their families".

The London Ambulance Service said it had taken eight people to hospital, while two were treated at the scene. The Muslim Council of Britain called what happened a "violent manifestation of Islamophobia".

Counter-terror police were investigating the incident. The attackers were killed by police.

Harun Khan, the head of the MCB, said the van had intentionally run over people who were leaving prayers held during the holy month of Ramadan. "More information to follow when we have it", they Tweeted.

London Metropolitan Police have provided few other details thus far, except that "there has been one person arrested". No other suspects at the scene were identified or reported to police, it said.

"Given we are approaching the end of the month of Ramadan and the celebration of Eid with many Muslims going to local mosques, we expect the authorities to increase security outside mosques as a matter of urgency".

British Prime Minister, Teresa May said she would chair an emergency response meeting later on Monday morning.

Britain's terrorist alert is set at "severe", meaning an attack is highly likely, Sky News reported.
