PH Embassy in United Kingdom condemns 'heartless' mosque attack

One person was killed and eight others were injured early Monday when a van struck worshippers near a North London mosque, in an incident police are treating as a "potential terrorist attack".

The area of London where a vehicle hit pedestrians early Monday local time is ethnically diverse and home to a large Muslim community. "There has been one person arrested", the statement said.

Mr Basu said two of the victims are "very seriously" injured and confirmed that all of the victims came from the Muslim community.

"We don't yet know the full details, but this was clearly a deliberate attack on innocent Londoners, many of whom were finishing prayers during the holy month of Ramadan", Khan said in a statement.

The mosque is near Seven Sisters Road, where the accident happened, and was once a notorious hub for radical Islamists but has entirely changed under new management.

British police say they are investigating a "major incident" at Seven Sisters Road in north London following reports of a van ploughing into pedestrians.

Heroic bystanders wrestled the suspect, who was clean-shaven with curly hair and wore a white t-shirt, to the floor and pinned him down until officers arrived, at around 12.20am, after he allegedly screamed: "I want to kill all Muslims".

One man could be seen giving CPR to a victim in the street while another man's head injury was treated with a makeshift dressing.

She described it as a "terrible incident", adding: "All my thoughts are with those who have been injured, their loved ones and the emergency services on the scene".

The area is in Corbyn's Islington North constituency.

Resident Cynthia Vanzella said she was in bed when she heard people shouting. "Right after the [police] auto stopped, a lot of people started pushing this man [the alleged suspect] to the police, as if signalling to arrest him", she stated.

"The driver of the van - a man aged 48 - was found detained by members of public at the scene and then arrested by police in connection with the incident".

Kozbar complained that the "mainstream media" was unwilling to call the attack a terrorist incident for many hours.

Londons transport authority said on Twitter that the Seven Sisters road had been closed due to an "emergency services incident".

Britain's terrorist alert level is now at "severe" meaning an attack is highly likely.

Its former imam Abu Hamza, who preached there from 1997 to 2003, was sentenced to life in prison in NY on terrorism charges in 2015. On June 3, a van drove into a crowd of people walking on the London Bridge, followed by knife attacks, leaving eight dead and many wounded.

In Manchester in late May, a suicide bomber killed 22 people, including many children, at an arena where a pop concert had just ended.

On March 22, a man drove a rented vehicle into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge in London and stabbed a police officer guarding the British parliament to death before being shot dead.
