Philando Castile shooting: 18 arrested in protests over Minnesota officer's acquittal

A U.S. police officer has been acquitted in the slaying of a black motorist he shot five times during a traffic stop previous year, an incident that drew national attention after the victim's girlfriend live-streamed the bloody aftermath on social media.

Jeronimo Yanez opened fire on Philando Castile, 32, during a traffic stop in Minnesota last July when he pulled him over for a broken brake light. Reynolds' four-year-old daughter was also in the vehicle.

"To build trust", she added, "we need a democratic system of policing where our communities have an equal say in the way their neighborhoods are policed".

Yanez was charged with second-degree manslaughter, punishable by up to 10 years in prison, though sentencing guidelines suggested around four years would have been more likely. A Minnesota police officer was cleared earlier Friday in the fatal sho. But a charge is not a conviction, and those grieving Castille's death would be waiting nearly a year to find out if Yanez would actually be found guilty for the killing.

Yanez testified during the trial in Ramsey County District Court that he feared for his life after Castile began reaching for a firearm that Castile had disclosed he had in his possession. And I think it is kind of a tipping point. An estimated 1,500 people marched through the city, then poured onto interstate highway I-94, shutting it down.

The City of St. Anthony fired Yanez Friday afternoon.

The mostly-white jury deliberated for some 29 hours over the course of five days this week before reaching the not guilty verdict.

February 11: Castile's mother, Valerie Castile, unveils a temporary memorial at the site of her son's shooting.

"You all murdered my friend and got away with it!" he shouted.

During the stop, Castile volunteered, "Sir, I have to tell you, I do have a firearm on me". "I will never have faith in the system".

During the session, Coleman was asked if the city would block access to the interstate during future marches or protests. In the wake of the trial outcome, thousands of outraged citizens took to the streets of St. Paul in protest and 18 were arrested. They used the bicycles to move the protestors in order to clear the parade route.

Authorities arrested 18 people during a protest of the acquittal of a suburban Minneapolis police officer who shot and killed a black driver. The announcement comes one day after the anniversary of the high-profile killing by police of another black man in Minnesota, Jamar Clark in Minneapolis. "Speakers led chants, sang hymns and urged the protesters not to lose hope". Many held signs that read "Black Lives Matter" and "Blue Lies Matter" as they headed for the St. Paul Cathedral.

John Thompson, who worked with Castile in St. Paul's public schools, stirred the crowd with profanity-laden remarks screamed into a microphone. He served food to the students everyday and was said to know everyone's name.
