PM May says thoughts with those injured in incident near London mosque

Police say the driver of a van that hit pedestrians on a London road is a 48-year-old man who has been arrested and taken to a hospital.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan urged people to "remain calm and vigilant" and said the Met had deployed extra police to reassure communities, especially those observing Ramadan.

He told BuzzFeed: "I think at least eight or 10 people got injured".

A witness told LBC radio people had been drinking coffee at a nearby cafe after leaving the mosque after Tarawih prayers performed for the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

The city's ambulance service said in a statement on Twitter that it had sent "a number of resources" including ambulance crews, paramedics and specialist response teams to the scene.

Many police cars and ambulances responded to the incident. "An advance trauma team from London's Air Ambulance has also been dispatched by auto", the statement said. Later on, the terrorist was shot dead by Scotland Yard officers in an incident inspired by "international terrorism".

"During the night, ordinary British citizens were set upon while they were going about their lives, completing their night worship", Secretary General of the Council, Harun Khan, said in a statement. A number of patients were also treated at the scene for minor injuries. "Many others are receiving medical care", Commander Stuart Cundy of the Metropolitan Police had said.

But Finsbury Park Mosque, an unassuming five-story redbrick building opposite the station, which opened in 1994, has been the area's most famous venue in recent years.

Traffic was shut down on a section of Seven Sisters Road, where the incident happened.

The crash occurred shortly after midnight, when police received reports of a collision between a van and pedestrians.

The Finsbury Park Mosque gained notoriety more than a decade ago for sermons by radical cleric Abu Hamza al-Masri, who was sentenced to life in a USA prison in January 2015 for his conviction on terrorism-related charges.

London's transport authority said on Twitter that the Seven Sisters road had been closed due to an "emergency services incident". It said its prayers are with the victims.

"I saw a man, he was underneath the van", Warfa said, who described how his friends tried to lift the van to free him. Three Muslim extremists who carried out the attack were killed by police.

British Prime Minister Theresa May said an incident in which a van ploughed through pedestrians near a mosque in north London overnight was being treated "as a potential terrorist attack".

"I heard there are fatalities but I don't want to jump to conclusions".
