Police raid home of Brussels attack suspect

Police raid home of Brussels attack suspect

Belgian authorities have been reacting to the incident and a spokesperson from the federal prosecutor's office, Eric Van Der Sypt said, "This is considered as a terrorist attack".

Witnesses said the suspect shouted "Allahu Akbar" (God is Greatest) before setting off the blast, which triggered a small but intense fireball in the station's underground hall.

Police in Belgium have raided the home of the attack suspect who was killed at the Brussels Central Station and took bags full of evidence with them. Five minutes later, his suitcase caught fire after a small explosion ignited in which no one was injured.

Mr Dales, who there in his capacity as an adviser to MEP John Procter, said he returned to his hotel to find it inside a police cordon set up after the terror attack.

According to the Belgian newspaper La Libre, the man detonated a device after he attracted the attention of soldiers who were patrolling the station.

Belgium's federal prosecutor says the incident at Brussels Central, one of the country's busiest stations, is being treated as a terrorist attack.

The attacker then ran down a flight of stairs toward a station employee and a soldier, Van der Sypt said.

"The suspect has been neutralised by the military that were present at the scene immediately after the explosion", he said.

People just a few feet from the explosion appeared unhurt and he said he saw no obvious damage to the walls around.

'He did not wear a belt with explosives, ' the statement said, correcting earlier reports by national media.

The attacker planned to carry out a bigger explosion and had a powerful explosive device, but failed to do so, Jambon added.

Brussels central station remained shut overnight, re-opening at around 8 a.m. local time (0600 UTC) on Wednesday.

The Belgian capital, home to the headquarters of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and the European Union, has been on high alert since a Brussels-based Islamic State cell organised the attack that killed 130 people in Paris in November 2015.

Belgium Prime Minister Charles Michel praised the security services and Belgium Rail for their courage that helped in controlling the situation within an hour.
