Police treating van attack on worshippers near mosque as terrorism

Indonesian Muslims offering prayers on the third night of the holy month of Ramadan at the Istiqlal grand mosque in Jakarta

"There are a number of casualties being worked on at the scene".

Witnesses described seeing police giving emergency medical treatment to victims after the incident at 12.20am on Monday in Seven Sisters Road, Finsbury Park.

"There has been one person arrested".

The incident comes after two deadly Islamist-inspired attacks this year that used vehicles to ram pedestrians - a stabbing spree earlier this month in the London Bridge area and a March attack in which a man drove a rented auto into crowds on Westminster Bridge.

One person died and ten people were taken to hospital after a van drove into worshippers leaving Finsbury Park Mosque.

Mohammed Shafiq of the Ramadhan Foundation, a Muslim organization, said that based on eyewitness reports, it seems to be a "deliberate attack against innocent Muslims".

The Independent reported witnesses' accounts of the van veering off the road into crowds of worshippers as they left special Ramadan prayers shortly after midnight.

"I've been in touch with the mosques, police and Islington council regarding the incident".

Another witness, who wanted to be identified as Abdulrahman, which is not his real name, told the Press Association: "I managed to get the driver of the van".

According to reports, at least ten people were hit outside the mosque with three of them being critically injured.

"I tried to stop him (the suspect), some people were hitting him but I said stop him and keep him until the police came". A number of police and ambulances were in attendance.

Mr Khan was vilified for his response to the London Bridge attack by US President Donald Trump, who claimed the mayor downplayed the incident.

Prime Minister Theresa May said she would chair an emergency security Cabinet session later Monday.

On 22 March, a man drove a rented auto into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge in London and stabbed a policeman to death before being shot dead.

On 22 May, a suicide bomber killed 22 people at a concert by American pop singer Ariana Grande in Manchester in northern England.

The Met confirmed that two people sustained minor injuries in the attack and were treated at the scene close to the Arsenal Football Club's Emirates Stadium.

Finsbury Park mosque was once infamous as the stamping ground of hook-handed hate preacher Abu Hamza.
