Pres. Trump confirms he's under investigation

The probe by special counsel Robert Mueller, a former FBI chief, "marks a major turning point in the almost year-old FBI investigation, which until recently focused on Russian meddling during the presidential campaign and on whether there was any coordination between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin", The Washington Post had reported.

Trump has called The Washington Post report a "phony story" and a "WITCH HUNT".

The White House has denied any collusion, and Trump has repeatedly complained about the probe, saying Democrats can not accept his election win. However, Trump later told NBC News' Lester Holt that he had already chose to fire Comey before that memo was written.

"Americans should exercise caution before accepting as true any stories attributed to anonymous 'officials, ' particularly when they do not identify the country - let alone the branch or agency of government - with which the alleged sources supposedly are affiliated", Rosenstein said. Trump fired Comey in May.

The op-ed comes just days after a friend claimed that President Donald Trump was considering firing the special counsel. Acting Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed Mueller in May to lead the probe.

The move ordered Thursday by the transition's general counsel cast a wide net on documents tied to the Russian Federation investigation as well as inquiries into the activities of Trump associates.

Trump has said he is "100 per cent" willing to testify under oath on Comey meetings and tell the FBI Special Consul Robert Muller that he never asked FBI to stop investigating.

If the news report is accurate, it means that the president is under investigation now even though he apparently wasn't as of May 9, the day he fired Comey, who has since outed himself as a leaker of information about Trump.

In his latest tweet, the president seemed to confirm he is under investigation for possible obstruction of justice. But as the legal rope has tightened, his allies have gone on the offensive, questioning the credibility of the special investigator Mueller, a respected former Federal Bureau of Investigation director who served under Republican president George W. Bush.

In his testimony, Director Comey called the media "seagulls chasing bread crumbs" who nearly always get it wrong when citing unnamed sources.

In March, he vented to the Washington Post after requests for administration documents weren't satisfied.

In addition to describing his interactions with the president, Comey told the intelligence committee that while he was FBI director he told Trump on three separate occasions that he was not under investigation as part of a counter-intelligence probe involving Russian meddling in the election.

His memo criticizing Comey - issued amid the former FBI director's investigation into Russia's 2016 actions - has cast doubt over his objectivity in the eyes of many Democrats.

Heck was referring to the growing number of legal teams forming as a result of the special counsel investigation into whether Russian Federation meddled in the 2016 US presidential election.

Rosenstein is at the center of Comey's departure: His memo to Attorney General Jeff Sessions is the basis that White House officials and Trump himself have used to defend Comey's dismissal, despite the FBI's ongoing investigation into the 2016 campaign and Russia's attempts to help Trump win.

The Washington Post said the decision by Mr Mueller to investigate President Trump's own conduct is a major turning point in the investigation, which until recently focused on the Russian angle.

Trump also trained his fire on his onetime rival Hillary Clinton.
