President says Sessions did 'very good job,' comments on Mueller rumors

One of those administration officials, Admiral Michael Rogers, head of the National Security Agency, met with members of the Intelligence Committee in a closed-door session, according to the agency.

Several Democratic senators have questioned Sessions' role in seeking Comey's ouster as Federal Bureau of Investigation director, considering the attorney general had recused himself from the probe of Russian meddling in the 2016 campaign.

When asked by Sen.

Sanders would not, however, say whether the President has confidence in Mueller in that role.

His responses triggered an explosion by Sen.

Gingrich said Sessions dominated the hearing because of his stubbornness and combative tone with Democrats.

Sessions: So the answer is, yes, I consulted. Aside from that, I'd say Sessions did about as expected. I mean the short version is, yes, witnesses before a Senate hearing, a House hearing, a court hearing have a right to not answer questions if doing so would violate some legal obligation or privilege.

Democratic senators have seized on the possibility of a third meeting to suggest that Sessions has not been forthcoming about the extent of his communications with the ambassador.

SHAPIRO: To help us understand the principle that allows Sessions to avoid answering these questions, we're joined by Steve Vladeck.

Democrats warned that Congress would turn around and re-appoint Mueller as independent counsel if Trump dismisses him.

Sessions argued that his statement at the confirmation hearing was not lie because of the context in which it was made - a "rambling" question from Democratic Senator Al Franken of Minnesota about collusion. "I'm not sure what was in his mind specifically".

The company also intends to cut costs, with plans to lay off about 2,100 people, or about 15 percent of Oath's staff. Oath is part of Verizon's Media and Telematics organization.

Similarly, he did not answer whether Trump had expressed concern to Sessions about the attorney general's March decision to recuse himself from the Russian Federation investigation. "Since you discussed his removal, why wouldn't you discuss the reasons?"

"I applaud Attorney General Sessions for testifying publicly before the Senate Intelligence Committee".

Coons on Wednesday said he believes both Sessions and fired FBI Director James Comey should appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee, to which he belongs, as it has jurisdiction over the Department of Justice.

First, Sessions discounted Comey's report that Sessions didn't want to leave the room because he felt like something might be amiss. Angus King (I-ME) confirmed that Trump had not invoked executive privilege to prevent Sessions from testifying at Tuesday's hearing. I was responding to this allegation that we had met - surrogates had been meeting with the Russians on a regular basis.

SESSIONS: I'm not claiming executive privilege because that's the president's power, and I have no power to.

If he does so, it will amount to an "all in" moment for the attorney general, because he already once had to clarify sworn testimony in which he said he didn't meet with Russians during the campaign.

Trump has expressed frustration with Sessions, one of his earliest high-profile campaign backers, but the attorney general's steely demeanor showed he was prepared to push back against outside criticism. Burr also asked for details of his involvement on Trump's foreign policy team and its possible interactions with the Russians.

Sessions recused himself from the Russian Federation probe the next day.

Sessions said he had confidence in special counsel Robert Mueller, but said that his recusal from the Russian Federation probe would stop him taking part in any hypothetical effort to remove him. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., and his defense against the attacks aimed at Sessions and the Trump administration. But he added that it wasn't clear whether Kislyak was exaggerating, suggesting a meeting with Sessions that had not, in fact, occurred. But that changed Tuesday, with a variety of Republicans coming to Sessions' (and the White House's) aide.

"I'm not able to be rushed this fast", the attorney general said.
