Presumed Death Toll Nearly Doubles After London Fire

Magee spoke to a young boy aged around five after watching him flee the inferno with his mother'who was in a really bad way

Prince William circumvented the rules on Friday as he was photographed hugging a woman whose husband went missing following the horrific fire at the Grenfell Tower apartment complex in North London, in which 79 people have died.

There were about 600 people living in the 24-storey Grenfell Tower when fire swept through most of the building in the early hours of 14 June.

The U.K. government must shore up the resources for an immediate inquiry into the Grenfell Tower fire and assess the safety and future of similar structures across the country, London Mayor Sadiq Khan said Sunday. The paneling has been blamed for quickly spreading the flames.

London police said Saturday that the death toll from the inferno at the Grenfell Tower in west London had risen to 58.

"This number 58 may change".

Cundy said a criminal investigation began the day of the fire and will look at a "wide range" of issues, including the renovation project, the public housing block's management and maintenance, and fire-safety measures.

The recovery operation at the burnt-out block of flats has resumed and could take weeks, Cundy explained and May said she expected to announce the name of the judge for a public inquiry within the next few days.

'Equally, there may be people who thankfully may have managed to escape the fire and for whatever reason have not let their family or friends or police know, ' he said.

Cundy added that authorities are investigating whether any crimes had been committed in the fire.

The blaze not only raised a series of questions about levels of inequality in London and British society, but also singed politics after Prime Minister Theresa May was barracked for her allegedly cold response to the tragedy.

"My commitment to families is that as soon as we can, we will locate and recover their loved ones", he said.

May and her ministers have said they will do all they can to help those left homeless after the blaze and make sure other high-rise buildings, usually home to poorer people, are checked and safe.

The fire has also been transformed into a symbol of class inequality - the Grenfell Tower's charred remains stand high above one of the British capital's wealthiest neighborhoods.

She says she will receive daily reports from the stricken neighborhood, where hundreds of people have been displaced.

Officials are using dental records, fingerprints, DNA samples, tattoos and scars to try and positively identify victims.

"The response of the emergency services, NHS [National Health Service] and the community has been heroic", May said in a statement released Saturday after the prime minister met with victims and community leaders.
