Prosecution rests in Cosby trial

Bill Cosby walks from the Montgomery County Courthouse during his sexual assault trial in Norristown Pa. Thursday

Bill Cosby has arrived at a suburban Philadelphia courthouse for the fifth day of his sexual assault trial.

Bill Cosby's spokesman is dangling the possibility that he may testify at his sexual assault trial, but legal experts say that would be an enormous risk. It included a statement that Cosby first became attracted to Constand, then manager of Temple University's basketball team, in 2003.

He said Constand's mom was antagonistic.

In his deposition, read in court by Montgomery County detective James Reape and District Attorney Kevin Steele, Cosby said that in the 1970s he had received seven prescriptions for quaaludes from a doctor in Los Angeles, even though he never meant to take them.

More than 50 women have said Cosby assaulted them, but the statute of limitations has run out in almost all cases.

"He is potentially opening the door to a whole lot of cross-examination that they fought really hard to keep out", said Duquesne University law professor Wes Oliver.

Prosecutors evidently saved the quaalude testimony until the end for maximum effect.

The defense's case is expected to wrap up some time next week.

ADL urges hate crime probe in Virginia killing of Muslim girl
The body of 17-year-old Nabra Hassanen was discovered by police floating in a pond in Sterling, Virginia on Sunday afternoon. According to family friend Yufra Abdelmuid, Torres was eating there and then followed them in his vehicle as they left.

Their testimonies have been some of the most powerful heard so far, as they both explained in great detail the changes to their daughters after they were allegedly assaulted by Bill Cosby and how, of course, they knew when something awful had happened to their daughters. His lawyers also declined to disclose their strategy or say who will testify when they begin presenting their case.

Cosby replied: "Dead." The final government witness, toxicologist Timothy Rohrig, said the drowsiness and sedation Constand described in her testimony after accepting three blue pills from Cosby in 2004 could have been caused by a drug similar to Quaaludes - or by Benadryl, the over-the-counter allergy medicine Cosby has maintained he gave to Constand that night. Cosby refused to answer and said he'd send them in the mail. She testified it can take years for victims to work out their feelings about what happened to them and accept the scrutiny of coming forward. Cosby insists in the deposition that the seven prescriptions for Quaaludes he received from a now-deceased Los Angeles doctor were for an injury for his back, but the physician knew that's not what Cosby was going to use them for. He read the depositions, in which Cosby admitted to using Quaaludes - a sedative that can induce sleep - to have sex with women.

He said: "I didn't want to talk about what did you give her".

Cosby's explanation was contained in a deposition he gave over a decade ago as part of a lawsuit filed by Ms Constand.

That 2005 suit was eventually settled out of court for an undisclosed amount. His testimony was sealed for years until portions were released by a judge in 2015 at the request of The Associated Press. Constand has alleged that Cosby gave her drugs that left her unable to move or say no and then sexually assaulted her in his home in 2004.

Ms Constand's case is the only one in which Cosby has been charged.

Cosby's lawyers asked for a mistrial, complaining that Valliere was offering observations about Cosby even though she was only allowed to testify generally about victim behaviour. She said it's not only common for a victim to reach out to her abuser, but she may attempt to find out what happened and why.
