Protesters demand answers over fire tragedy

British Prime Minister Theresa May, facing criticism for the government's handling of the disaster, met Saturday with 15 fire survivors invited to her official residence at 10 Downing Street.

The fire at the 24-story building has led to community anger and protests over the British government's response. They said officials have failed to give enough information and support to those who have lost relatives and their homes.

Critics have said that it is because of the empty properties that people will be forced outside of the local area.

"What I'm now absolutely focused on is ensuring that we get that support on the ground", May said in a BBC Newsnight interview.

"We need urgent action now to make sure that all records and documents relating to the refurbishment and management of Grenfell Tower are protected". The newspaper quoted company director John Cowley as saying the building used Reynobond PE cladding, which is 2 pounds cheaper ($2.56) per square meter than Reynobond FR, which stands for "fire resistant".

Days after a blaze tore through Grenfell Tower in London, the death toll continues to rise: City police announced Saturday that 58 people "are missing and we assumed likely to have died".

Commander Cundy further informed that the police investigation into the fire "will take weeks, it may take longer than that".

The government has set up a £5 million emergency fund for the Grenfell Tower residents, allocating a minimum £5,500 to each household with £500 cash payments already being handed out.

There is simmering anger in the multi-ethnic north Kensington area hit by the blaze, and public fury has been directed at senior government figures, including May, who was jeered Friday after she visited.

The cause of the fire has not been confirmed - although one witness said they thought it was started by their neighbour's fridge exploding - as it was declared a major incident.

While the blaze has prompted an outpouring of generosity, with many people donating provisions and clothes, it has also unleashed rage at the authorities as the charred tower was cast as a deadly symbol of a deeply divided society.

Tension also rose when around 60 protesters stormed Kensington and Chelsea Town Hall brandishing a list of demands and seeking help for those made homeless.

The queen's official birthday is marked in June when the weather is often nicer than in April, the actual month of her birth.

"In recent months, the country has witnessed a succession of bad tragedies".

"Put to the test, the United Kingdom has been resolute in the face of adversity", Elizabeth said. "United in our sadness, we are equally determined, without fear or favor, to support all those rebuilding lives so horribly affected by injury and loss".

Such a direct message from the monarch is rare and indicated the extent of the turmoil in Britain.

Questions over the Prime Minister's judgement were raised as she was accused of failing to show empathy with those affected by the tragedy. She faced cries of "coward" and "shame on you" as she returned Friday to meet survivors, residents and volunteers at a local church.

"Wallowing in the wash of a general election that stripped our prime minister of her authority on the very eve of European Union negotiations, neither common sense nor the evidence suggest she can re-establish public confidence", Parris wrote in the Times.

"After a tragedy of truly national dimensions like this, the prime minister can not simply behave like a grey-faced executive at a company who has been confronted by a public relations foul-up".
