Qatar will not shut gas pipeline to 'brothers' in UAE

"There was shooting by Saudi border guards. and one Iranian fisherman was killed", the semi-official agency quoted an Interior Ministry official as saying.

The IRINN TV news channel reported that local sources from Boushehr province said that Saudi coast guard officers fired at two Iranian fishermen on Friday, killing one.

"Even if the boats had entered Saudi waters, the coastguard were not authorised to open fire", Aghababaie added.

"The ordeal lasted almost 10 hours during which we faced multiple interrogations and lock-up", he said, expressing gratitude to the Turkish authorities for solving the issue.

Saudi Arabia and Iran have repeatedly put forward mutual claims about interference in internal affairs and support for extremists. Riyadh has denied involvement in the attacks.Iran and Saudi Arabia accuse each other of subverting regional security and support opposite sides in conflicts in Syria, Yemen and Iraq.

Abdullah said in a statement the pair "were detained from our hotel by Saudi police in Mecca after a live analysis" on the crisis with Qatar.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif also pointed the finger at Saudi Arabia, during a visit to Norway this week.

Despite the diplomatic dispute between the Gulf Arab nations and Qatar, Doha won't cut gas supplies to the United Arab Emirates (UAE); Saad Sherida al-Kaabi, chief executive of state-run Qatar Petroleum, told Al Jazeera.

Shiite Iran has had no diplomatic ties with most of the mainly Sunni Gulf states since 2016, when Arab nations followed Saudi Arabia in severing relations after protesters torched its missions in the Islamic republic.

In a speech marking Ramadan, Sheikh Sabah said he hoped the remaining days of the Muslim holy month would create "the atmosphere for resolving unfortunate differences and ending the rift through dialogue and communication" in the Gulf.
