Rafael Nadal wins French Open without dropping a set

The Latest Mattek-Sands Safarova win women's doubles

Claycourt master Rafael Nadal was too hot to handle as he crushed Swiss third seed Stan Wawrinka 6-2 6-3 6-1 to claim a record-extending 10th French Open title on Sunday.

The 31-year-old claimed a comfortable 6-2, 6-3, 6-1 straight sets win at Roland Garros in Paris to claim the 15th Grand Slam title of his career.

Nadal's victory made him the first man in the Open Era to win the same grand slam on 10 separate occasions, enhancing his right to the nickname of "King of Clay". Twelve years later he is still chasing rival Roger Federer for the all-time Grand Slam standings.

Whether or not that happens, Nadal's lack of points to defend in comparison to Murray - who only lost two matches after the French Open previous year - make it seem virtually nailed on that he will overtake him at some point in the next six months.

The 2016 version of Novak Djokovic, who was utterly dominant on his way to a first French Open title has vanished without a trace and was perhaps the only man who has ever truly got to grips with Nadal on the surface.

"I try my best in all events but the feeling I have here is impossible to describe", the champion said on Court Philippe Chatrier. "Because I need to feel strong, low and powerful legs to play well in Wimbledon".

When the ball was in play, Nadal barely missed at all.

Nadal's opponent in today's match Stan Wawrinka had won the crown in 2014.

But he dominated the clay court season this year with titles in Monte Carlo, Barcelona and Madrid.

Two days after turning 19, Nadal became the youngest man to win a major title since Michael Chang was 17 at the 1989 French Open.

The colossal win is important for Nadal in one other respect. In all my time watching tennis, I've never seen or heard of anything close to a tournament like Nadal just had.

An unseeded player has not won the French Open since 1933.

Former top-ranked Andy Roddick has expressed his astonishment at Rafael Nadal's incredible run to his 10th French Open title.

35 - Nadal averaged just five games lost in his seven matches this year, three more than Bjorn Borg's record set in 1978.

- At just 19, Nadal became the youngest victor of a Grand Slam title since Michael Chang won at Roland Garros in 1989 at 17. Facing a trio of set points, Nadal showed the mettle and shots that would become so familiar, saving all three and not dropping another game for his first major championship.

"From the beginning I didn't play my best tennis".

At one point when talking to the crowd, Nadal switched from French to English because he said his French was "very bad". He lost in the fourth round in 2009 and the quarterfinals in 2015.

"Nothing to say about today", Wawrinka told Nadal during the trophy ceremony. "I am in a good position".
