Rep. Scalise's Condition Improves, Upgraded to 'Serious'

U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise's condition has been upgraded to "serious" after he underwent surgery Saturday for injuries sustained in a shooting at a Republican congressional baseball practice earlier this week, the hospital treating him said in a release.

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise delivered a Father's Day message through his Twitter account today.

The bullet struck Scalise in the hip, and traveled across his body, shattering bones and passing through internal organs, causing major internal bleeding.

Sava said his risk of death is "substantially lower" than it was on Wednesday. Scalise remains in critical condition, though doctors said Friday his vital signs have stabilized. Our family asks that you continue to pray for Steve, Matt Micah, Zach Barth, and all those hurt in this attack, and keep them in your thoughts and prayers during their recovery.

The gunman, James T. Hodgkinson, died in a shootout with police.

However, according to Dr. Jack Sava, Rep. Scalise's condition has improved slightly.

He added that Scalise would be in the hospital "for some time" and would need "a period of healing and rehabilitation" after being discharged.

Scalise was sedated Friday, but the husband and father of two has been able to respond to his doctors and family.

The president said that because of the "tremendous pain and suffering he's now enduring. our country will perhaps become closer, more unified".

"Tonight we're all Team Scalise", House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said at Thursday night's Congressional Baseball Game.

"It's been much more hard than people even thought at the time". Scalise has been an avid participant in the game since arriving in Congress in 2008.

Scalise remains in critical condition at a hospital near the Capitol and has undergone multiple surgeries.

The president made his comments as he spoke in Miami to announce a new policy on Cuba.

Information has emerged that the gunman who opened fire on congressmen at a Virginia baseball field on Wednesday had a list of Republican lawmakers names in his pocket at the time of the incident.
