Republican leads as costly congressional race heads for a tight finish

Her major victory Tuesday over Democrat Jon Ossoff, 30 anni, in Georgia's 6th Congressional District has the GOP victorious in an election recognized as the most expensive House race in United States history, with a cost of about $50-M.

Democrats continued their special election losing streak on Tuesday as one of the party's bright hopes, Jon Ossoff, lost his bid for a suburban Atlanta Congressional seat long held by Republicans-a painful defeat that highlights deep fissures in the party.

Democrats also lost a special election in neighboring SC on Tuesday, where Republican Ralph Norman easily prevailed over Democrat Archie Parnell in a seat formerly held by Republican Mick Mulvaney, who is now serving as Trump's budget director. They need to flip 24 GOP seats.

The Atlanta seat was made vacant when Congressman Tom Price left to join the Trump administration as health secretary.

The most expensive House race in USA history heads to voters Tuesday in suburban Atlanta.

Karen Handel, Republican candidate for Georgia's 6th congressional district greets diners during a campaign stop at Old Hickory House in Tucker, Ga., Monday, June 19, 2017. They fell short in other special congressional elections earlier this year in Kansas and Montana, and are expected to lose another race on Tuesday in SC.

Handel commended Ossoff and pledged to work for his supporters.

Problems at two polling locations in Georgia's special election for the state's sixth congressional district forced election officials to resort to paper ballots Tuesday. It has been held by Republicans, including House Speaker Newt Gingrich, since 1979. Her protestations aside, she often embraced the national tenor of the race, joining a Republican chorus that lambasted Mr Ossoff as a "dangerous liberal" who was "hand-picked" by House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California.

It's also a win for Donald Trump for one simple and obvious reason: because the alternative would have been so much worse for him.

In a traditionally Republican district which former Rep. Tom Price won by 20 points, early polls indicate a very close race that could come down to a percentage point.

Mulvaney won the seat with at least 78 percent of the vote. Handel has not released her most recent fundraising numbers, but multiple analyses put the race at more than $50 million in total, including spending from outside groups.

Handel celebrated the early numbers with her supporters at an area hotel, saying she improved on her April primary performance.

The Congressional Leadership Fund, a political action committee backed by Ryan, has spent $7 million on her behalf. The Republican campaign establishment, however, helped make up the difference.

Attorney David Ware said a belief that health care should be affordable determined his vote for Mr Ossoff.
