Roland Garros-2017: Murray and Wawrinka has qualified for the 1/8 finals

Third seed Stan Wawrinka, the 2015 French Open champion, strode into the last 16 at Roland Garros on Saturday with a straight-sets win over Italy's Fabio Fognini. With that in mind, it was heartwarming to see a great display of sportsmanship at the French Open on Thursday, as Juan Martín del Potro, who has suffered a string of injuries in his career, crossed the net to console a teary-eyed Nicolas Almagro after the Spaniard was forced to retire from their round of 64 match.

Halep is in sublime form after winning the Madrid Open and reaching the final in Rome last month, and is one of the favourites in Paris as a result.

A former top 10 player, the world number 56 will meet Croatian seventh seed Marin Cilic for a spot in the quarter-finals. The first set was the highlight of the whole tournament - tennis players battled for nearly half an hour, and the best was Murray who had to play a few set-Bolov. "I played really well during the points today, and like in the last round I found a way to turn the match around".

"Whoever won that first set would have the momentum as it would have been very hard to come back in these heavy, slow conditions", said Murray. "The Olympics was physically hard - and hard mentally and psychologically - but I had also come off a period of rest and trained and prepared for it whereas when you get to Davis Cup I'd played the Olympics, gone to Cincinnati, then NY and back for Davis Cup". That's been the case so far. I was not playing well.

Del Potro is optimistic he will be fit to face Murray, saying: "I will have two days in order to rest and recover".

He saved a set point at 4-5 and then another in a memorable 10th game, missing a sitter forehand before finally breaking back.

In the final, the Swiss met an irrepressible Rafa Nadal, who did what Nadal does best - win on the red dirt. The first round of matches at Wimbledon begin July 3.

Del Potro had four set points in the opening set but lost each one, including that key double-fault while ahead 7-6 in the tiebreaker.

Del Potro also suffered an injury scare himself when he pulled up, holding his left groin in the second set. "I couldn't believe I lost that set". "I had great opportunities in the first two sets".

On the other hand, the Argentine was in all kind of problems every time he would have missed the first serve, and he had to play against 17 break points.

Del Potro's refusal to go away was a defining feature of last year's memorable Olympic final between the pair, but this time the Argentinian's resistance proved to be fleeting.

The opening set took 84 minutes, but Murray's game then lifted significantly after he failed to dominate the early part of the match. It was very slow and heavy conditions and to be coming back was hard.

"Obviously from his reaction at the end of the first set, he was pretty disappointed", Murray said.
