Rosenstein warns Americans to 'exercise caution' about anonymous reports

In a message that journalists and political observers say looks like a shocking attack by a sitting president on his own Justice Department, President Donald Trump appeared to take aim at Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein in a Friday morning tweet.

The president appeared to stop tweeting long enough to get some sleep, but he was back at it bright and early Friday.

Special counsel Robert Mueller's move to investigate whether Donald Trump sought to get the Federal Bureau of Investigation to back off from a probe of his former national security adviser has angered the president and raised the stakes in the inquiry of Russian meddling in the U.S. election.

After Trump's tweet Friday morning, a person close to the president's legal team told NPR's Scott Horsley that the tweet referred to the Wednesday Washington Post report regarding possible obstruction of justice.

Trump's campaign and his associates are under the microscope for their Russia ties - as opposed to Clinton and other Democrats' unspecified "dealings with Russia" - because the investigation is about Russian interference in the election.

Trump's tweets are also read by other world leaders, they can impact the stock market, they can drive a specific brand into the toilet. First, it is the president himself acknowledging that he is, in fact, under investigation for possible obstruction of justice-something even on Thursday the White House would not acknowledge.

The Trump tweets come after the top lawyer for his transition team warned organization officials to preserve all records and other materials related to the Russian Federation probe.

Mueller is leading the Russian Federation probe after being appointed by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein in the Department of Justice, which oversees the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

"You have my assurance that we're going to faithfully follow that regulation (that gives Meuller his authority), and Director Mueller is going to have the full degree of independence that he needs to conduct that investigation appropriately", Rosenstein told Congress June 13.

In another tweet Friday morning, Trump said it's "sad" that seven months of investigations and hearings into possible links between his campaign and Russian Federation have been fruitless.

"The Fake News Media hates when I use what has turned out to be my very powerful Social Media - over 100 million people!"

When Trump fired former FBI Director James Comey last month, he initially cited a memo written by Rosenstein as the basis for the dismissal.

Vice President Mike Pence has also hired a private lawyer to represent his interests in the expanding probe. He is reportedly interviewing three top intelligence officials - Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats, National Security Agency Director Mike Rogers and retired deputy NSA director Richard Ledgett - as part of the probe as early as this week.

The US president has denied trying to influence the investigation, but has acknowledged in an interview that Russian Federation was on his mind when he dismissed Comey.

Comey testified last week that he also felt pressured to drop the Flynn probe.

Durbin, speaking on WGN radio, said he hoped the response to Trump firing Mueller would be bipartisan if it occurred.
