Rumor That Trump May Fire Mueller Sets Washington Alight

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein told senators during the appropriations subcommittee hearing that he has not seen any evidence of good cause for firing Robert Mueller III, whom he appointed as special counsel to supervise the investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation during the 2016 presidential election. "With respect to this subject, only the president or his attorneys are authorized to comment".

Mr Trump can not directly dismiss Mr Mueller.

"If President fired Bob Mueller, Congress would immediately re-establish independent counsel and appoint Bob Mueller", the California lawmaker tweeted.

Mueller is assembling a high-powered team of Washington legal talent, including Michael Dreeben, a former Justice Department lawyer who has argued 100 cases before the Supreme Court, and Andrew Weissmann, chief of the Justice Department's fraud section who oversaw corruption investigations including the Volkswagen cheating probe.

Rosenstein testified that he is the only one who has the authority to fire Mueller, who was appointed following the May 9 ousting of James Comey as Federal Bureau of Investigation director, and that he had seen no good cause to do so.

'Look, the president of the United States, as we all know, is a unitary executive, ' Sekulow said instead of answering the question definitively.

"One of my sources reached out to me right before went on air and they said there's mass hysteria in the West Wing about this", Ryan bleated.

Sessions, who had been slated to testify before the Senate budget panel, will appear later Tuesday before the Senate Intelligence Committee investigating Russian interference in the 2016 elections.

Mr Ruddy was at the White House on Monday to meet with White House aides, but did not speak with the president, Press Secretary Sean Spicer said. An order from the president would not necessarily qualify, he said.

"I have determined that a special counsel is necessary in order for the American people to have full confidence in the outcome", Rosenstein said last month.

Given that kind of support, a Democratic lawmaker, Ted Lieu, taunted the White House over the Mueller-firing chatter: "Double dare exists".

Substitute anchor Kristen Welker, who led the interview about the alleged discussions about firing Mueller, replied, "Obviously, the legitimacy of the special counsel would be up for debate".

And Trump really doesn't like the idea of that. "But the president is going to seek the advice of his counsel and inside the government as well as outside", Mr Sekulow said.

In an interview with PBS Newshour, he said: "I think he is considering, perhaps, terminating the special counsel".

Another talk-radio Trump booster, Laura Ingraham, who was rumoured to have been considered for a White House position, directed her followers to a story in a conservative newspaper that suggests Mueller might be tainted. During that hearing, Sessions said he had not had any contac with Russian officials - a claim that was later proved untrue, ultimately leading Sessions to recuse himself from all Justice investigations involving the Trump campaign.

'But I can't imagine that that issue is going to arise, ' the attorney added. The White House finally said Tuesday evening that Trump has "no intention" of firing Mueller, amid speculation and concern that he was weighing that option.
