Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny 'arrested on way to protest'

Putin critic Alexei Navalny detained ahead of protestMore

So the opposition leader called for a march through central Moscow instead.

Navalny's Fund for Fighting Corruption had been providing updates on protests throughout the country Monday.

It started with the chanting, ended with mass pushing with the police, and arrests in Moscow's central Moscow street, where a festival dubbed Times and Epochs was to be held and feature historical reenactments. In Moscow, more than 150 were detained in the city's downtown "for violating public order", says state-run Tass media.

More than 1,000 protesters were arrested at a similar rally March 26.

There was also a large police presence in St. Petersburg, where protesters chanted "shame" during a rally at the Field of Mars park. Navalny then laid the groundwork for the June 12 rallies, crisscrossing Russian Federation to open campaign offices and meet volunteers, many who have known no national leader other than Putin.

Navalny, who had a caustic green liquid thrown in his face in April, robbing him of some of his sight, said he expected demonstrations from Moscow to Murmansk.

Ironically, Monday was a day of celebration for Russian Federation as it was observing National Day on June 12.

The protest Monday was part of a day of demonstrations throughout Russian Federation spearheaded by Alexei Navalny, the anti-corruption campaigner who has emerged as Russia's most prominent opposition figure and who has announced he intends to run for president next year.

The video included an alleged recording of a telephone conversation with a contractor who said his bosses told him it was "forbidden" to provide services to Navalny's group.

Navalny was previously arrested in March for protesting against the financial corruption of Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.

The current thorn in Putin's side is Alexei Navalny, blogger and opposition leader.

Protests against corruption that were organized by opposition activist Alexei Navalny and his supporters took place in many Russian cities on June 12.

Mr Medvedev said nothing for weeks before dismissing it as "nonsense".

Riot police in Moscow have begun detaining demonstrators in an unsanctioned opposition rally in the center of the city.

Permission was granted for demonstrations in 169 locations across the country, some of which were broadcast live on the Navalny Live YouTube channel.

Navalny's press secretary, Kira Yarmysh, posted on Twitter that tear gas had been used against her.

The arrest of Navalny came as thousands of protesters clashed with police in Moscow and St. Petersburg earlier on Monday, reports CNN.

The White House strongly condemned the arrest of hundreds of anti-corruption protesters in Russian Federation on Monday, in a rare criticism of human rights violations and the Kremlin from Donald Trump's administration. "He is in the department of the Interior Ministry in the Danilovsky district", Navalny's lawyer Vadim Kobzev wrote on Facebook page.

Navalny was taken to court Monday evening and sentenced to 30 days in jail shortly after midnight for repeated violations of the law on public gatherings.

Shortly after he was led from the court room, Navalny joked on Twitter the would have to miss out on a Depeche Mode concert while he was in jail.

Navalny, a Kremlin foe who is seeking to run for president next year, is looking to build on momentum picked up during nationwide protests in March, which drew unexpectedly large crowds and ended with more than 1,000 people detained in Moscow alone. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin's office said that protesters would be allowed to participate in the demonstration if they did not carry signs with political slogans.
