Scalise upgraded to serious condition after more surgery

House Majority Whip Rep. Steve Scalise on Capitol Hill in 2015

United States congressman and senior Republican Steve Scalise has been upgraded from "critical" to "serious condition" and continues to show signs of improvement after being shot while he practised for a charity baseball game.

Trump added that Scalise is "having a hard time, far worse than anybody thought" following the shooting Wednesday.

This is according to a person familiar with the case who was not authorized to speak publicly and spoke to The Associated Press Saturday on condition of anonymity.

"I think that an excellent recovery is a good possibility", Dr. Jack Sava, director of trauma at MedStar Washington Hospital Center said at a news conference Friday afternoon.

The gunman, identified by law enforcement officials as 66-year-old James Hodgkinson of Belleville, Illinois, later died from injuries sustained during a shootout with police on the scene.

He had been in critical condition since arriving at the hospital in shock after the shooting at a baseball field where members of Congress were practicing. The person did not disclose the names, but said those listed had been briefed.

MedStar said in a statement Friday that Scalise was in critical condition but had showed signs of improvement. It includes photos of Scalise and his family.

"I feel a lot more confident and a lot more optimistic than I did two, three days ago", Sava said. But he will remain in the hospital for "a considerable period of time" and faces additional operations. Steve Scalise, congressional aide Zach Barth and US Capitol Police officer Crystal Griner were also shot in the early morning ambush; Capitol Police officer David Bailey and Texas Rep. Roger Williams were injured. "Matt especially valued the professionalism of the officers of the Capitol Police, and would appreciate contributions to the Capitol Police Memorial Fund, one of the designated charities at Thursday night's ball game".
