Scott Pruitt Leaves G7 Climate Meeting More Than A Day Early

The United States refused Monday to sign onto a Group of Seven pledge that calls the Paris climate accord the "irreversible" global tool to address climate change.

"I believe engaging in worldwide discussion is of the utmost importance to the United States when it comes to environmental issues", Pruitt said in the statement.

Two weeks after President Trump announced he'd withdraw from the Paris climate accord, the US on Monday took its first concrete step toward that end by formally rejecting the agreement on the world stage.

The U.S. did, however, promise to continue efforts to reduce pollution and promote energy efficiency, and Mr. Pruitt rejected the idea that the Paris pact is the only way forward.

On 2 June 2017, NY state announced a US$1.5 billion investment in renewable energy projects as part of the state's pursuit of 50% renewable energy by 2030.

Trump's representative at the meeting, Scott Pruitt, the head of the Environment Protection Agency, was unrepentant, insisting USA action spoke louder than words.

"The United States has always been a world leader when it comes to environmental stewardship, and that was demonstrated on a global stage (on Sunday)", Pruitt said in a statement.

On June 1, President Donald Trump announced the United States is pulling out of the Paris climate accord.

Trump has sometimes dismissed man-made climate change as a hoax even though a United Nations panel of leading scientists says it is at least 95 percent probable that man-made emissions were the main cause of warming since the 1950s.

"We said 'No way you are adding a footnote that you are leading, because that is not true, '" the delegate said. She said Canada remains "deeply disappointed" in the USA move to abandon the accord, and that it was "very sad" to see the Americans reduced "to a footnote on climate actions".

One member state, Hawaii, passed a law on June 6 formally committing the state to the Paris Agreement.

Separately, U.S. states, state attorneys general, cities, businesses, and universities have banded together into a coalition called We Are Still In.

Scientists have known since the 19th century that burning coal, oil and gas spews carbon dioxide into the air, which then acts like a blanket to trap heat on Earth.

Hulot said USA commitments on other environmental issues, notably cleaning up the world's plastic-choked oceans, were not in doubt, and the commitment of industry players to green technologies and renewable energy would not be affected by Trump's position.

OTTAWA-The Prime Minister's Office is disputing a report in a German magazine that described Justin Trudeau's concern about "provoking" the United States for withdrawing from the Paris climate agreement.

Under the Paris accord, families in the Plains states would not be able to benefit from the low-cost and abundant energy resources available in the region and would instead be forced to pay thousands of dollars in additional costs related to higher-priced renewable-energy sources.
