Scottish independence dealt a blow after nationalists suffer losses

The sizable losses appear to be a repudiation of the party's promise to push for Scots to go back to the polls for another vote for independence.

Ms Davidson said: "SNP MPs who last night lost their seats have paid the price for what was a massive political miscalculation on Nicola Sturgeon's part".

The SNP argued that Scots deserved a do-over of the 2014 independence referendum, which the "leave" campaign lost by around 5%. In the 1950s there was no Scottish Conservative party; they were called the Unionist Party.

Commenting on the results, Ms Davidson said the Scottish nationalists should now agree to take a second referendum "off the table".

The shock forecast, released as the polls closed but before ballots were counted, suggested Thursday that British Prime Minister Theresa May's gamble in calling an early election has backfired spectacularly and put her continued rule into question.

While the Conservative Party suffered losses in much of Britain, Davidson's Scottish branch had its best result in over three decades.

While the the SNP won almost all available seats in 2015, this was largely because the pro-independence vote rallied behind one party, whereas the Unionist vote was split three ways between Labour, the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats.

"In Scotland, the SNP won this election".

In March, Ms Sturgeon fired the starting gun on IndyRef2, announcing plans to hold a second vote between autumn 2018 and spring 2019 - before the final deal on Brexit was due to have been reached. Her stance, a far cry from that of Sturgeon, was based on understanding "the street." .

So has Angus Robertson who is the SNP leader in Westminster.

Labour will be focused on holding on to the party's only Scottish MP Ian Murray in Edinburgh South but are also hopeful of capitalising on a surge in polling support to gain East Lothian.

The SNP is expected to remain Britain's third-largest party, giving Sturgeon the chance to seek a "progressive alliance" with Labour to lock Mrs May's Conservative Party out of government. But we learnt nothing about May's plans, beyond banalities, and everyone from here to Berlin can see she has lost, not gained, authority.

The election results in Scotland have delivered a number of surprises.

The last Labour MP in Scotland, who hopefully will get some company this time around, is well known and liked on the doorstep - even by members of other parties, and his hard work hasn't gone unnoticed.

Of the six seats the nationalists won in the 2010 general election, four were lost, including Eilidh Whiteford's, who saw a near 15,000-strong majority in Banff and Buchan overturned by the Conservatives' David Duguid.

The sentiment was also noted by CNN's Nic Robertson.

The SNP held Glasgow North, Glasgow East, South West, North West and Central and South. Whether or not this diminishes their support for Scottish independence remains to be seen. Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath, Gordon Brown's old seat, and East Renfrewshire, which is being contest by Blair McDougall, former chair of the Better Together campaign, are two that many are keeping a close eye on, should the winds favour us.
