Senate Passes New Iran Sanctions Bill 98-2

The Senate voted overwhelmingly on Wednesday to allow Congress exercise the power. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has offered only tepid support for the Russian Federation sanctions package. Corker said he'd agreed to give Tillerson a "short window of opportunity" to reverse the deteriorating relationship between the United States and Russian Federation. Then it will be brought before US President Donald Trump, who will have to either sign or vetoit.

"What I wouldn't want to do is close the channels off", Tillerson told a Senate committee. As an example, Tillerson said talks with Moscow on stabilizing war-ravaged Syria are progressing, but it's too early to tell if the discussions will bear fruit.

It was introduced amid an intense focus in the United States capital on relations with Russian Federation, and investigations by the Department of Justice and congressional committees of whether Russian Federation sought to influence the 2016 elections to help elect Trump, and whether Trump associates colluded with Moscow as it sought to influence the election.

The congressional review measure is part of a wider deal that would not only strengthen those existing sanctions, but also enact new ones.

The administration fears that the sanctions, passed on a 98-2 vote Thursday, will tie its hands in dealing with Moscow, Politico reports, citing a senior White House official.

The measure, attached as an amendment to a broader bill dealing with Iran, firms up existing sanctions against Russian Federation and imposes new ones.

The Senate bill also would cement in law a series of executive orders signed by Obama and aimed at punishing Russian Federation for aggressive behavior, including its 2014 annexation of Crimea and support for separatist rebels in Ukraine's east.

A vote on the Russian Federation sanctions is scheduled for Wednesday, and the measure is expected to get strong bipartisan support.

"This is a very, very strong piece of legislation", said Sen.

The leaders of the Senate Banking and Foreign Relations committees announced late Monday that they'd reached an agreement on the sanctions package after intensive negotiations. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., and Ben Cardin, D-Md., of the Foreign Relations panel. Jeanne Shaheen, a New Hampshire Democrat.

"This amendment is also an important step as we continue its efforts to reassert congressional authority", Corker said. They would target Russia's defense, intelligence, railway, mining and shipping industries.

The Trump administration is reviewing the Senate measure, according to a White House official, who asked for anonymity to discuss internal deliberations.
