Several Casualties Reported as Vehicle Strikes Pedestrians in North London

One man died after the driver, described as a large white man, targeted people near the Finsbury Park Mosque in north London early on Monday.

Police were called just after 0020hrs 18 June to reports of a vehicle in collision with pedestrians.

"We sent over 60 medics to the scene, including ambulance crews, advance paramedics and specialist responses teams and an advance trauma team from London's Air Ambulance", said the service's Deputy Director of Operations, Kevin Bate.

A further two people were treated at the scene, where police arrested a man who had been held by members of the public amid angry scenes.

Numerous victims are believed to have just left evening prayers at the Muslim Welfare House after breaking the Ramadan fast.

Britain set its terror at "severe", meaning an attack is highly likely, after a pair of incidents recently.

Opened in 1994, Finsbury Park Mosque is an unassuming five-story redbrick building in residential north London, close to Arsenal Football Club's Emirates Stadium.

Eyewitness Cynthia Vanzella said it was a mixed community, with people from many different countries and cultures. "Our prayers are with the victims".

A Reuters witness saw at least one person being loaded into an ambulance. Many police cars and ambulances were responding. Before that several pedestrians and a police officer were killed in a car-and-knife attack in London.

But the Met said: "At this early stage of this investigation, no other suspects at the scene have been identified or reported to police, however the investigation continues". According to the 2011 Census, half the population in the borough aged under 25 are from nonwhite ethnic backgrounds.

Abdulrahman Saleh Alamoudi said he was among a group of people helping an elderly worshipper who had fallen down when the van swerved towards them.

"When I looked back, I thought it was a vehicle accident, but people were shouting, screaming and I realised this was a man choosing to terrorise people who are praying", he told Reuters.

Transport for London tweeted that Seven Sisters Road was closed northbound at Hornsey Road and southbound at Rock Street. It has not been associated with radical views for more than a decade.

It happened shortly after midnight, near the Muslim Welfare House in Finsbury Park.

Among those known to have worshipped at the mosque during al-Masri's time at the mosque were alleged shoe-bomber Richard Reid, and Zacarias Moussaoui, the so-called "20th hijacker" of September 11.

"Whilst the motivation behind the attack has not yet been confirmed, all the victims were from the Muslim community and we want to reassure the public that we have patrol plans in place that ensure a visible uniformed presence at mosques".

Eight people were killed and 50 injured on June 3 when three Islamist militants drove into pedestrians on London Bridge and stabbed people at nearby restaurants and bars.

"We saw lots of people shouting and lots of people injured", David Robinson, 41, who arrived just after the accident, told AFP.

She added: "Everybody was clamoring around and shouting at the man ..." That incident came just a week after the Manchester Arena attack, which killed 22 and left more than 100 injured.
