Several killed in London vehicle collision

The incident follows a series of attacks in Britain.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said it was a "horrific terrorist attack", calling it "deliberate" and aimed at "innocent Londoners, many of whom were finishing prayers during the holy month of Ramadan".

A 48-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and is in custody. The investigation into the matter will be conducted by counter-terrorism command.

The attack was a "sickening attempt" to destroy the freedom to worship, the prime minister said outside Downing Street.

London police have declared the crash a major incident and closed the area to normal traffic.

Another witness, Adil Rana, 24, said: "The van was driving towards us to try and basically hit us at speed".

Forensics officers are examining a white van which has Pontyclun Van Hire on it - a Rhondda Cynon Taff firm.

The chairman of the mosque, Mohammed Kozbar, described the incident as a "cowardly attack" and said there were many injuries.

Sky News reported that police said the incident happened after worshippers were leaving the Finsbury Park mosque after prayers.

"The man tried to escape".

"I hit him on his stomach... and then me and the other guys... we held him to the ground until he couldn't move".

"Everyone was shouting "a van's hit people".

The Muslim Council of Britain also called on authorities to increase security outside mosques. "There was three people in the van". There are also reports that a man armed with a knife leapt out of a vehicle and stabbed at least one person.

Courageous onlookers had wrestled the suspect to the ground until police arrived. And he just came into all of us. "He punched me in the head". I think between eight to 10 people were taken away.

He said: "He just came into all of us".

May also said the government was assessing the security of mosques in the United Kingdom, adding that there had been "too much tolerance" of extremism and vowing to fight it in the same way the United Kingdom had fought racism.

"Sort of in a victory of what the terrorist act that he has done", said the local.

The Muslim Council of Wales said it was "horrified by the news of the attack on Muslim worshippers". "My prayers are with the victims and their families", read the statement.

On June 19, at around 00:20 (02:20 Moscow Time), a van ploughed into pedestrians in London's Finsbury Park area. Around 10% of the borough's population is Muslim. A vehicle struck pedestrians near a mosque in north London early Mond.

British Home Secretary Amber Rudd says police "immediately" treated a fatal incident outside a London mosque as a suspected terrorist attack.

On 22 May, Salman Abedi, a Manchester-born 22-year-old blew himself up at the end of an Ariana Grande concert at the Manchester Arena.

According to a London Metropolitan Police press release, one person was killed and eight were injured after a van swerved down an alleyway in the park and struck a group attending late-night Ramadan prayers.
