So it Begins: Brexit Talks to Focus 1st on Orderly Exit

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson

Philip Hammond has warned failing to secure a Brexit deal would be "very, very bad" for Britain ahead of the start of exit talks in Brussels on Monday.

Britain and the European Union are already at odds over the order of the talks, with London insisting future trade ties should be discussed at the same time as the divorce despite opposition from Brussels.

The former Welsh Secretary was brought back into government by Theresa May after she became leader last June.

"As David Davis boards the plane to negotiate Brexit on behalf of the Government, it is unclear what the Government's position actually is".

In the political turmoil following last week's inconclusive General Election, there have been reports that senior ministers including the Chancellor Phillip Hammond are pressing for a new approach to leaving the EU.

Before the election, May proposed a clean break from the European Union: leaving its single market, which enshrines free movement of people, goods, services and capital, and proposing limits on immigration and a bespoke customs deal with the EU.

Instead of gaining an increased majority, the Conservative Party lost seats and ended up as the largest party in a hung parliament, becoming dependent to govern on a hastily cobbled-together supply and confidence arrangement with Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party- hardly an ideal scenario with the important formal Brexit negotiations with the European Union set to begin next week.

BRUSSELS — Talks on Britain leaving the European Union began Monday with both sides saying they will focus first on an orderly withdrawal: a deal for citizens living in each other's territory, border arrangements between Ireland and the United Kingdom and the amount that Britain will pay to get out of previous EU commitments.

Ireland's Varadkar says reassured by UK PM May over DUP deal
TAOISEACH LEO VARADKAR paid his first visit to No. 10 Downing Street today, for talks with UK Prime Minister Theresa May . He said the last minute meetings "underline and emphasise" the strength of Ireland's relationship with the UK.

The negotiations kick off in Brussels on Monday with Britain under pressure for stalling the talks and entering the negotiations without a working parliamentary majority fully in place. "A deal like no other in history".

The 60-year-old prime minister emerged victorious from a bitter and divisive leadership battle after her predecessor, David Cameron, quit following Britain's vote a year ago to leave the EU.

After the initial shock of last year's Brexit vote, the bloc at 27 appears to have steadied in recent months and got a real morale boost with the election of French President Emmanuel Macron in May. "If we needed any reminder of the urgency of having powersharing institutions in Stormont, it is the coincidence of the Brexit negotiations beginning in Brussels today".

Britain faces a hefty compensation demand from the EU to cover its outstanding payments to the EU budget and contributions to EU programmes, as well as European officials' pensions.

The government's current weakness has helped fuel criticism of its approach to Brexit, although pro-EU campaigners' hopes that it could rethink the decision to leave the European Union have come to nothing.

"He will also face an enormous amount of resistance on the ground from the vested interests of the trade unions which still wield an enormous amount of influence, and could make life very hard for the inexperienced new President and his party".

Johnson called on people to look at the more distant future.

Referring to its new poll of 1,350 contract professionals, the advisory found that nearly four in ten contractors said they expected the UK's 'leave' decision to "negatively impact" them.
