SpaceX launches 10 satellites from California air base

The last time USA rockets launched such simultaneous types of rockets in two days apart was in 1995 when both Lockheed Martin Atlas and Atlas-E sent two separate missions into space with the intention of delivering Intelsat broadcast and Air Force weather satellites to space.

On Sunday 25 June A second Falcon 9 launched from Vandenburg Air Force Base in California carrying 10 Iridium NEXT satellites.

The company sent its first used Falcon 9 into orbit in March, when the rocket successfully returned to orbit and landed on a floating platform in the Atlantic Ocean.

Despite blustery winds and high seas, the California rocket builder also was able to recover the booster's first stage with a pinpoint landing on an off-shore droneship, SpaceX's 13th successful landing in a row. The company's original block 1 satellites are being replaced by 66 Iridium NEXT spacecraft with nine more serving as in-orbit spares.

The rocket's first stage for the BulgariaSat-1 mission previously supported the Iridium-1 mission from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California in January of this year.

SpaceX plans to launch Iridium's 75 satellites that will create a strong and reliable network that will likely allow everyone on Earth to easily contact anyone from anywhere on Earth.

The payloads for this launch are the second set of 10 Iridium NEXT satellites.

According to Iridium, it is on track to fully replace the world's largest commercial satellite network of low-earth orbit satellites in what will be one of the largest "tech upgrades" in history.

The missions saw both rockets drop from space landing into the sea to ensure that the boosters would be available for reuse in the future.

SpaceX's Sunday launch came just two days after launching a Bulgarian communications satellite from Florida.

"Right now, it's two down with six more launches to go", Matt Desch, chief executive officer of Iridium, said in a statement.

Several old satellites have been moved into lower orbits to use up their remaining fuel and configure the solar panels for maximum drag so they will re-enter the atmosphere and burn up.

The Iridium NEXT program also will bring an end to so-called "Iridium flares", which space enthusiasts have observed for years.

"Crosslinks, as we refer to them, allow our satellites to bounce data and voice calls around the world almost instantaneously, creating a true web of coverage around the entire planet, the key advantage of our network and one of the biggest reasons for our growth and success".
