Special Counsel Investigates Trump, Son-in-Law

According to Comey, Trump was referring to the FBI's investigation into Mike Flynn, who was sacked himself as national security adviser months earlier for allegedly lying to White House officials about his post-election contacts with Russian operatives.

"Americans should be skeptical about anonymous allegations", Rosenstein said.

The Times points out that Trump's tweet came hours after an "oddly worded" statement by Rosenstein about leaks.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., the ranking Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said Friday that she is "increasingly concerned" that Trump will try to fire Rosenstein and Mueller. "Nice", Trump wrote in his first tweet. "Witch Hunt", the President tweeted.

About a week after Comey was sacked last month, however, Rosenstein appointed former FBI Director Mueller as a special counsel at the Justice Department to oversee the federal investigation into Russia's efforts to meddle in the 2016 US election, according to CBS News.

Comey said he believed Trump was trying to get him to drop an investigation of the president's former national security adviser, and that White House officials spread "lies, plain and simple" to cover up the reason for his dismissal.

Mr Trump did not identify "the man" but appeared to be questioning the integrity of Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, the Justice Department's No 2 official who appointed Mr Mueller on May 17, supervises the probe and wrote a memo to Mr Trump critical of Mr Comey that preceded Mr Comey's firing.

Rosenstein brought up the possibility of recusing himself during a meeting with the Justice Department's third-in-command - behind Sessions and Rosenstein - Associate Attorney General Rachel Brand, ABC News reported.

Trump fired FBI Director James Comey in May, and that firing is now reportedly part of an investigation into whether Trump obstructed justice as president.

The FBI has not complied with CNN's Freedom of Information Act request, despite the argument made by CNN's President Jeff Zucker that "the public has the right to see them".

A Trump's transition official confirmed the lawyer's internal order, which was sent on Thursday. The official demanded anonymity because the official was not authorized to be named discussing the deliberations.

Ruddy, who had been at the White House on Monday, told PBS that Trump is considering terminating the special counsel.

Vice-President Mike Pence has also hired a private lawyer to represent his interests in the expanding probe. The tweets were the latest in a week of angry social media responses from the president over a report by the "Washington Post" that Mr Mueller was looking into whether Mr Trump obstructed justice.

The president himself took to Twitter Wednesday morning to decry "the single greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history".

President Donald Trump has lashed out at the investigators driving the Russian Federation investigation as "very bad and conflicted people", responding angrily to reports that the special counsel is looking into whether Trump obstructed justice.
