State Capitol Demonstration Planned After Yanez-Castile Verdict

St. Anthony police officer Jeronimo Yanez stands outside the Ramsey County Courthouse while waiting for a ride in St. Paul Minn. Closing arguments are set for Monday Ju

St. Anthony police Officer Jeronimo (yeh-RON'-ih-moh) Yanez is charged with killing Philando Castile following a traffic stop last July in a St. Paul suburb. Yanez shot the 32-year-old school cafeteria worker seconds after Castile informed him he had a gun during a traffic stop. Castile's gun permit was later found in his wallet. Jurors were to return Tuesday morning.

Castile also resembled a suspect from a robbery days earlier, defense attorney Earl Gray said. He urged a jury to clear the officer.

Assistant Ramsey County Prosecutor Jeff Paulsen began his closing arguments shortly after 10 a.m., describing what he called Officer Yanez's impulsive decision that led to Castile's ultimate death - one that he said makes him guilty of culpable negligence. He said Castile ignored Yanez's orders and reached for his gun while high on marijuana, adding Yanez felt his life was in danger during the situation and "did what he had to do".

That BCA interview does show some discrepancies that the prosecution is depending on - such as Yanez saying he saw an "object" but not definitively saying it was a gun, as he did while on the stand.

Noting that there was no damage to Castile's pocket or gun, Paulsen said that Castile's finger could not have been on the gun when he was shot.

The jury also made a request to view the transcript of the BCA interview conducted with Yanez, however, the judge denied that request because it was never submitted as evidence. He tells his supervisor that he didn't know where Castile's gun was and that he told him to take his hand off it. Yanez testified that he meant only that he didn't see the gun at first. They also argued that Castile had smoked marijuana before the traffic stop and was stoned, which influenced his actions.

ST. PAUL, Minnesota (CNN) - Philando Castile was calm and polite when an officer pulled him over for a broken taillight, a prosecutor said Monday, yet he still died in a barrage of gunfire.

Valerie Castile, right, leaves the Ramsey County Courthouse alongside Judge Glenda Hatchett, left, in St. Paul, Minn. on Monday, June 12, 2017.

"This is what I live for", Castile said.

Two of the seven shots fired by Yanez missed Castile and nearly hit the girlfriend in the passenger seat, Diamond Reynolds, and her four-year-old daughter in the back seat, Paulsen said.

The mother of a black man fatally shot by a Minnesota police officer last July says her son shouldn't have died the way he did.

After broadcasting on the radio that he believed he was stopping robbery suspects, he approached the passenger side of the vehicle and encountered Philando Castile.

She says, "This is no longer about Philando; this is about humanity". They were to present their closing argument later Monday. Officer Jeronimo (yeh-RON'-ih-moh) Yanez is charged with manslaughter in Castile's death, which came just seconds after Castile informed the officer he was carrying a gun. While it captures what was said between the two men and shows Yanez firing into the vehicle, it does not show what happened inside the auto or what Yanez might have seen.

Reynolds said that as Yanez continued to point his weapon into the auto after firing several shots, she feared for her safety and that of her 4-year-old daughter, who was also in the vehicle. The rest are white.
