Stay put? Deadly London fire puts scrutiny on high-rise rule

Grenfell residents in ‘passionate angry’ exchanges with PM at Downing Street

Victims, volunteers and community leaders from the Grenfell Tower fire travelled to Downing Street to meet the prime minister Theresa May on Saturday afternoon.

It comes after Mrs May avoided speaking to the protestors who gathered outside Kensington Town Hall on Friday night to demand answers about the tragic fire.

The prime minister is still reeling from a botched snap election that resulted in her Conservative Party's loss of its majority in Parliament.

Criticism of May intensified Friday after she sidestepped questions in a televised interview about whether she had underestimated the public's anger and frustration. "Sadly we do not expect there to be any survivors", Cundy said.

She said in her message on Saturday: "Today is traditionally a day of celebration". She has also pledged $6.4 million in support to the residents and promised that those who lost their homes would be relocated within three weeks.

"I spoke with people who ran from the fire in only the clothes they were wearing", she said in a statement.

"We have colleagues in there as we speak, searching for and recovering those that have died".

"Wallowing in the wash of a general election that stripped our prime minister of her authority on the very eve of European Union negotiations, neither common sense nor the evidence suggest she can re-establish public confidence", Matthew Parris wrote.

Asked by ITV interviewer Robert Peston if he would "seize it forever, or just just take it for as long as they're needed", he replied: "Occupy, compulsory purchase it, requisition it, there's a lot of things you can do". The UK government has already announced a full judge-led public inquiry in an attempt to learn lessons from the tragedy and implement any necessary fire measures in other residential towers blocks.

It followed a separate, smaller protest at Kensington Town Hall, where residents tried to air their grievances to councillors.

She told BBC One's Sunday Politics: "We are still hearing stories of people not being allocated properly". In recent months, the country has witnessed a succession of awful tragedies. She said Britain remains "resolute in the face of adversity" after the horrendous fire and recent extremist attacks in London and Manchester.

On the lack of sprinklers in Grenfell Tower, and other buildings, he said: "My understanding is that the best expert advice is that retrofitting sprinklers may not always be the best technical way of ensuring fire safety in a building". "This is an absolutely very bad fire that took place", May said.

"Wallowing in the wash of a general election that stripped our prime minister of her authority on the very eve of European Union negotiations, neither common sense nor the evidence suggest she can re-establish public confidence", Parris wrote in the Times.

"At No 10 yesterday, the Prime Minister assured the group that from now on residents would be consulted on a coordinated relief effort".
