Syrian warplane shot down by US-led coalition

Russian Federation says it will treat US-led coalition planes in Syria, west of the Euphrates, as targets. Coalition aircraft stopped the pro-regime forces from advancing on Ja'Din.

"The coalition presence in Syria addresses the imminent threat ISIS in Syria poses globally", OIF said.

"The demonstrated hostile intent and actions of pro-regime forces toward coalition and partner forces in Syria conducting legitimate counter-ISIS operations will not be tolerated", it added.

The U.S. Central Command said the Syrian plane was downed in self-defence after "pro-Syrian regime forces" attacked an SDF-held town near Tabqa.

In the statement, the coalition stressed its goals and that it will defend its partnered forces. The coalition also said that Russian officers had been contacted on a special "de-confliction" hotline in an effort to halt the regime's attack.

After Sunday's episode, the US -led task force said it was not seeking a confrontation with Assad or the Iranian, Russian or Shiite militias that are fighting to support the Syrian leader - but added that it would defend the Syrian fighters it has assembled to pursue the Islamic State.

The U.S. did not use its communication channel with Russian Federation ahead of the downing of the Syrian government warplane, the ministry was quoted as saying.

"The attack stresses coordination between the US and ISIS, and it reveals the evil intentions of the US in administrating terrorism and investing it to pass the US-Zionist project in the region".

Ryabkov said that he and US Undersecretary of State Thomas Shannon would meet in St Petersburg on June 23 to discuss problems in bilateral ties, Interfax reported. This month Syrian Kurdish and Arab fighters, supported by USA advisers and air power, began the battle for Raqqa, the militants' self-declared capital.

Syrian Democratic Forces reportedly came under attack from forces in favor of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Sunday afternoon in the town of Ja'Din, south of Tabqa, Syria.

US led forces in Syria have downed a Syrian military jet in Raqqa province, home to the ISIS insurgency.

The US also launched US launched 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles at Syria's Shayrat airbase in April, earlier this year, in response to a suspected chemical weapons attack by the Syrian government in the country's Idlib province.

The threat may bear little teeth given that the majority of US anti-ISIS operations occur east of the Euphrates river. The Kurdish fighters, members of the YPG armed wing of the Kurdish Democratic Union (PYD), are among some of the most effective fighters in the campaign to defeat ISIS in Syria.

Now Washington is extending this protection to forces that it backs who are engaged in the offensive against Raqqa.

This policy of engaging Syrian forces attacking our rebel allies should have been in place from day one.
