Teen hurt after dropping from ride at Six Flags

A 14-year-old girl fell 25 feet from the Sky Ride at Six Flags Great Escape in upstate NY, but she wasn't seriously injured, authorities said.

Police say the girl fell from the auto, hitting a tree branch on her way down, and landed in the crowd of guests and employees gathered underneath.

After being treated by Six Flags emergency medical personnel, according to News10, the girl was taken to Glens Falls Hospital and then to Albany Medical Center, where she is now being treated. A few moments later someone shouted, "They'll catch her" as the girl dropped from the ride into the arms of the crowd below.

The girl, from DE, was in one of the ride's two-person cars with another child, a relative of hers, when it was stopped by an operator following a report someone was in distress, officials said.

Mr Howard and his daughter were among those who caught the girl when she fell. Another person seated on the ride with the girl appears to help free her neck and then her head can be seen.

They were able to catch her, but Lent says watching it all unfold was hard.

Generally speaking, amusement parks can be sued for negligence, including failing to maintain equipment, failing to warn riders of risks, failing to train the operators of rides, and providing incorrect instructions to riders.

"No one wants to put himself underneath a body like that, but I couldn't stand by and watch".

Many onlookers shouted in worry as it looked like she could fall to the ground.

Mr Howard, a contractor from Schenectady, was treated and released for a minor back injury after the rescue.

"I said: "It's OK!" The two took the brunt of the girl's fall, collapsing to the ground themselves.

The Sky Ride, listed under "Family Rides" on the park's website, is described as "a roundtrip ski-lift style gondola ride".

When asked whether the girl's evacuation from the ride had followed protocol, Wood did not specify but said that all rides have a "standard evacuation plan".

"Every situation is unique and requires the appropriate time and tools for the evacuation", Wood said in a statement.

The ride was shut for safety checks and has since been cleared for operation, but will remain closed.

Six Flags closed the ride afterwards to investigate how she became stuck.
