Texas Republicans still mostly like Trump

Texas Republicans still mostly like Trump

He has reason to be angry. These expectations have also proven wrong, at least so far, as Republican attitudes registered in the latest poll illustrate: 68 percent of Texas Republicans said Trump has the temperament to be president and 66 percent said he was honest and trustworthy.

Other polls were similar in their findings, with Gallup, YouGov, and Ipsos all reporting approval ratings of 39 per cent.

Democrats and other Trump detractors might expect mounting evidence of Trump's failings to disillusion his supporters, but there are few signs of erosion among Trump's base - even on subjects that might lead to alienation.

Almost two-thirds of Americans disapprove of the job President Trump is doing in the White House, according to an Associated Press/NORC poll released Thursday.

Overall, 64 per cent disapprove and just 35 per cent approve of his job performance.

The US President announced on Friday that he was being investigated for firing former FBI Director James Comey, and seemingly trained his guns on deputy attorney general accusing him of overseeing a "witch hunt" against him. It showed Clinton up by two percentage points nationwide before the Democrat went onto win the popular vote by a single percent, to the great frustration of Trump, who triumphed in the Electoral College. It's worth noting that obstruction of justice has always been considered an impeachable offense.

What do you think of President Trump's performance and the FBI's handling of the Russian Federation investigation?

Eighty percent of Republicans rated Trump's job performance positively.

The poll also found that 65 percent of Americans believe Trump has little or no respect for the country's democratic institutions and traditions.

While the White House has always been defined by tumult and some Republicans have been withdrawing from the president for a while, recent signs have been particularly worrying for Trump.

Within a couple of hours after the poll results were released, Trump took to Twitter to proclaim that the 50% approval rating he received this month is "great news".

"If this were a prize fight, some in his corner might be thinking about throwing in the towel".

"Republicans like Cruz more than we like dads on Father's Day", said Daron Shaw, co-director of the poll and a government professor at UT-Austin. "With a third of the members of his own party questioning his level headedness, this is clearly the moment the president needs to steady the ship".
